CLEVELAND, Ohio - The No. 20 Purdue wrestling team took eight-of-10 matches on its way to a 39-7 victory at Cleveland State on Sunday, improving to 3-0 on the season. The Boilermakers earned five wins with bonus points, including senior Devin Schroder's 22nd career technical fall and a third fall of the season for fellow senior Michael Woulfe.
The Boilermakers started off the dual knowing they'd accept a pair of forfeit wins as Cleveland State was unable to field a wrestler at 133 or 165 pounds due to COVID protocols. Freshman Matt Ramos took the win at 133 for Purdue, while sophomore Emil Soehnlen received the forfeit at 165.
Schroder opened up the dual with his third victory of the year and first of the season by bonus points, blanking No. 33 Logan Heil 15-0. He got on top and started working turns early, building an 8-0 first-period lead and stretching it to 12-0 after the second. Schroder added two more points via escape and riding time in the third to make it a 5-0 lead for the Boilermakers. The shutout is his second of the season and 33rd of his career.
After the Ramos forfeit, senior Parker Filius kept the bonus points coming with a 21-8 major decision over Caleb Graber at 141 pounds, reeling off eight takedowns in the victory. His attack was relentless through the match, and he earned a pair of stalling points in the third period on his way to the finish, his second bonus-point win of the season.
CSU got on the board at 149 pounds as Marcus Robinson earned a 18-6 major decision over Purdue sophomore Trey Kruse, but Boilermaker junior Brennan Doyle swung the momentum back at 157 pounds, earning a 7-3 decision in his varsity debut. Doyle scored a takedown in each period on his way to his first collegiate victory and gave Purdue an 18-4 lead at the intermission.
The second half started with the second forfeit of the dual, and sophomore Gerrit Nijenhuis kept the train rolling with a 10-2 major decision over Anthony Rice at 174 pounds. Nijenhuis hit a four-point move out of the gates and then continually added points in his second win of the season.
Senior Max Lyon fell victim to a pair of stalling warnings in a 2-1 loss to DeAndre Nassar at 184 pounds. Lyon fired off shot-after-shot through all seven minutes, only forcing one stall warning on Nassar, while Lyon's two calls came on action on the edge of the mat and on top in the third period.
Junior Thomas Penola and Woulfe finished up the dual in punishing fashion as Penola posted a 22-7 technical fall over No. 28 Benjamin Smith at 197, while Woulfe beat the buzzer in the second period for the fall over John Kelbly at heavyweight. Penola notched six takedowns in his win, taking Smith to his back twice and tacking on the riding time point at the end of the match for the tech fall. Woulfe had a 2-0 lead after the first, reversed Kelbly to start the third and then took him to his back at the end of the second, improving to 3-0 on the season with a trio of falls.
Purdue has its home opener next weekend, hosting Brown, Bellarmine, Duke and Northern Illinois for the 2021 Boilermaker Duals. Action begins at 9 a.m. ET at Holloway Gymnasium, and the Boilermakers will start their day at approximately 10:30 a.m. Purdue's three matches will be streamed on B1G+.
