WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue baseball welcomes a Wabash Valley College team that won 53 games in the spring to Alexander Field on Saturday for the first of the Boilermakers' two fall ball exhibition games.

First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. ET. The teams have agreed to play 14 innings regardless of the score. Admission is free for all fall events at Alexander. Purdue hosts another successful NJCAA program, John A. Logan College (42-18 in the spring), the following Saturday for another exhibition game.

Current Boilermakers Landon Weins and Curtis Washington Jr. both played a season at Wabash Valley before transferring to Purdue. Weins started the October 2019 Purdue-Wabash Valley game at Alexander Field, a 12-inning affair the Boilermakers won 11-10 after scoring twice in bottom of the ninth. Purdue was unable to host fall ball exhibition games last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Washington enjoyed a big season for the Warriors in the spring, compiling a .412/.511/.692 slash line to go along with 63 RBI, 46 stolen bases and more walks (34) than strikeouts (31). Those impressive numbers helped earn the West Memphis, Arkansas, native an opportunity to play in the new MLB Draft League over the first six weeks of the summer. Cam Thompson and Washington have both been two-time fall ball Players of the Week already, each earning hitter and defender honors over the first three weeks of fall practice. Weins was recognized as the other Defender of the Week honoree so far.

Freshman outfielder Cam Hill and Washington both homered in the Oct. 1 open scrimmage at Alexander to open up Homecoming Weekend on campus.

This week, D1Baseball tabbed Washington No. 16 among its list of the top 50 junior college transfers nationally. Meanwhile, Perfect Game USA ranked Washington No. 2 among its list of prospects in the Prospect League after the outfielder joined the Cape Catfish for the final weeks of the summer ball season and helped Cape Girardeau win the league title.

Based in Mount Carmel, Illinois, near the banks of the Wabash River, Wabash Valley competes in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference and NJCAA's Region XXIV. Last season, the Warriors were the top-ranked NJCAA team for 10 of the 12 weeks of polling from March 1 through mid-May while compiling a 53-5 record. New Boilermaker Jake Jarvis' Central Arizona team was No. 1 the other two weeks.

Washington was the MVP of the Region XXIV Tournament. But Indian Hills College (Ottumwa, Iowa) won two of three vs. the Warriors at the Midwest District Tournament to deny WVC a spot in the NJCAA World Series. New Boilermaker Wyatt Wendell pitched six innings of one-run ball in Indian Hills' game 2 victory in the series.

Former Boilermaker Braden Giroux (2018) was a member of Wabash Valley's 2017 team that finished third at the NJCAA World Series. James Jewell (2015-16) and Tanner Schumacher (2016-17) also played for Purdue in recent years after at least one season in Mount Carmel.
