WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue baseball's 2022 schedule features a program-record 28 home games and seven weekends at Alexander Field.
Head coach Greg Goff has unveiled a slate that features 38 total games in the states of Indiana (29) and Illinois (9). The Boilermakers are slated to host Bellarmine (March 11-13), Illinois State (March 19-20) and Belmont (April 22-24) for non-conference home weekends as well as Ohio State (March 25-27), Indiana (April 8-10), Michigan (April 29-May 1) and Maryland (May 19-21) for Big Ten play.
Purdue has played just 13 of its 56 (23%) regular-season games at Alexander Field since Valentine's Day 2020. The Boilermakers are slated to double that total of home dates this spring.
The Indiana series the weekend of April 8 to 10 will mark just IU's second trip to Alexander for a weekend series in the ballpark's 10-year history. The COVID-19 shutdown in the spring of 2020 wiped out an Indiana-Purdue series at Alexander. Since 2014, 14 of the 18 games in the rivalry series have been played in Bloomington. The Boilermakers have won three of the four meetings at Alexander.
Purdue is slated to open its season at a Triple-A ballpark in Texas for the second year in a row. This year it's a four-game series vs. first-time foe South Dakota State at Constellation Field in the Houston suburb of Sugar Land, the home of the Sugar Land Skeeters (Houston Astros affiliate).
The next two weekends the Boilermakers will return to North Carolina for weekend series vs. Princeton and Longwood at Ting Stadium in Holly Springs, the home of the Holly Springs Salamanders of the Coastal Plain League – one of the premier summer ball leagues in the southeast. Purdue swept through the four-team Campbell Invitational in Buies Creek, North Carolina, early in the 2020 season before the shutdown.
The Boilermakers have two long homestands on the schedule – seven consecutive home dates from March 19 to 29 and eight straight games at Alexander Field from April 20 to May 1. Purdue opens and closes Big Ten play at home, Ohio State the weekend of March 25 to 27 and Maryland the weekend of May 19 to 21.
A full list of gameday promotions and special dates at Alexander Field will be released in February or early March.
FAMILIAR FACES RETURN TO ALEXANDER
• The annual midweek game vs. Purdue Fort Wayne, set for April 12, takes on a higher profile this season because it will feature the return of all-time wins leader Doug Schreiber. The Purdue alumnus was hired as the head coach of the Mastodons in July 2019. Schreiber was a four-year starting second baseman for the Boilermakers in the 1980s and led the program to 485 wins and the 2012 Big Ten title as head coach from 1999 to 2016. Purdue Fort Wayne assistant coach Brent McNeil is a Lafayette native and former head coach of the Lafayette Aviators.
• The Boilermakers will also connect with former assistant coaches Steve Holm and Wally Crancer when Purdue and Illinois State play a unique home-and-home four-game series March 17 to 20 in Normal and West Lafayette. Greg Goff, Holm and Crancer were all assistant coaches during the Boilermakers' memorable 38-win NCAA Regional season in 2018. Holm was hired as ISU's head coach that summer and Crancer joined him as the associate head coach. Crancer was an assistant at Purdue for five seasons from 2014 to 2018, working under both Schreiber and Mark Wasikowski.
• Purdue alumnus Dustin Glant (2001-03) also returns to campus this season. He was hired as the pitching coach at Indiana in July.
