COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sarah Griffith scored the fastest overtime goal in program history as the No. 19 Purdue soccer team beat Ohio State 1-0 on Thursday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
Griffith provided the overtime heroics with her Big Ten-leading 12th goal of the season as the Boilermakers (11-2-2, 6-1-0 Big Ten) won their third consecutive game and ninth in their last 10. Senior goalkeeper Marisa Bova made a career-best nine saves to earn her 17th career shutout.
The game-winner came at 90:34, as Griffith scored on a beautiful ball into the box by senior midfielder Teagan Jones. It is Purdue's fastest overtime goal and the fourth ever in the first minute of OT. Tonight's winner bested the previous record of 41 seconds in a 2006 win.
With the victory, Purdue won its 11th game of the season for the first time since a 12-win campaign in 2009, while the six Big Ten wins is the program's most since it won eight in 2007. Both the Boilermakers' 11-2-2 overall record and 6-1-0 Big Ten mark are their best since 2007.
Griffith's historic season continued with her overtime goal. She has scored in six consecutive matches, tied for the longest streak in program history, set in 2018, while her seven goals in that stretch are tied for the most in a goal-streak. Additionally, Griffith continued her streak of at least one point in all seven Big Ten games, also tying the team record point streak, set in 2013.
With her 12th goal in 2021 and 22nd in her career, the Naperville, Illinois, native is now tied for third for goals in a season and tied for sixth in career goals. The game-winning goal is her fourth this year, tied for No. 4 all-time, and ninth in her career, sixth-most in the record books. Griffith has 25 points this season, tied for No. 8, and her 51 career points is tied for ninth.
With another shutout, win and career-best save total, Bova also saw her name climb in the Purdue record books. In a single season, the Hartland, Wisconsin, native is No. 2 with a .853 save percentage, tied for No. 6 with 11 wins, No. 8 with a 0.91 goals-against average and tied for No. 9 with 81 saves. The 11 victories is the most by a Boilermaker goalkeeper since 2009. Among Bova's career top-10 totals are her 17 saves, third-most all-time, 25 wins and 4,816 minutes, No. 4 in school history and 198 saves and 50 starts, fifth-best.
Purdue was out-shot 21-9 on Thursday night, and the Buckeyes (7-7-1, 2-4-1 Big Ten) had a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. OSU had eight corner kicks to the Boilermakers' one.
Senior midfielder Sydney Duarte had a team-best three shots, one on goal, and freshman forward Gracie Dunaway had two shots, one on target. Griffith was held to one shot, which found the back of the net. As Bova stopped all nine shots she faced, Ohio State's goalkeeper made three saves.
The game-winning goal came at 90:34. Ohio State had the opening kickoff to begin the extra period, but sophomore midfielder Emily Mathews forced a turnover near midfield just 15 seconds in. Two passes later, the ball was at Jones' feet as she sprinted down the sideline, past OSU's bench and leaving a Buckeye defender behind. Still near the sideline, Jones slowed as she approached the 18-yard box, then looked to move around a defender.
From just inside the touchline outside the box, Jones sent a left-footed ball to her right and into the goal box. Her cross was tipped by a leaping Ohio State keeper, who was off her line, and it fell right to Griffith as she came in from the top of the 18-yard box. All Griffith had to do was tap it in, as she scored from the far side of the goal box with a well-struck shot with her right foot.
Jones' assist was her third of the season and she has six in her career. The senior is tied for fourth on the team with five points.
Four of Bova's saves came in the first half, as OSU had a 6-5 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal. Bova added five second-half saves, and it was the Buckeyes with 15 shots, five on goal, to the Boilermakers' three shots, one on target. Five of Ohio State's eight corner kicks were in the second half.
Up next, Purdue's roadtrip concludes at Penn State on Sunday, October 17. Kickoff against the defending Big Ten regular-season champions is at 3:30.
