WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – For the second straight week, Herman Sekne was named the Big Ten Golfer of the Week after winning the Purdue Fall Invite on Tuesday.
Sekne becomes the fourth Boilermaker in school history to earn back-to-back Big Ten Golfer of the Week accolades, joining Pariya Junhasavasdikul (March 2007), William Sjaichudin (March 2011) and Adam Schenk (Feb-March 2014) as Boilermakers to achieve that.
Sekne became the first Boilermaker since William Sjaichudin (won three straight) to win consecutive events, with a dominating individual performance at the Purdue Fall Invite. Sekne totaled an 11-under par 205 (72-66-67) to win medalist honors by a whopping seven shots over Cincinnati's Joey McCarthy.
The sophomore from Oslo, Norway, becomes just the second Boilermaker ever to have two tournaments 205 cumulative or lower (Adam Schenk). His 205 is tied for the sixth-lowest, 54-hole score in school history and he is now the 12th player in Purdue history to win multiple events.
Sekne lowered his team-leading stroke average to 69.67 strokes per round and his streak of six straight rounds of even par or better rank fifth in school history.
Already this season, Sekne has five rounds (out of 12 total rounds) in the 60s, just one shy of Purdue's single-season top-10 list already (the school record is 11). He already has nine rounds of even-par or better.
The Boilermakers will be off until the spring season begins in early February.
