WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue cross country team travels to Terre Haute, Indiana, for the John McNichols Invitational on Saturday, September 18, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.
The meet commences with the men's 8k at 9 a.m. ET, and the women's 5k is set for 9:45 a.m. Live results will be available at TimingMD.net, and additional updates can be found by following and connecting with the Boilermakers on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
Purdue will compete against 14 schools at the John McNichols Invite. Along with host-Indiana State and Big Ten foe Indiana, the field features Ball State, DePauw, Eastern Illinois, Evansville, Huntington, Indiana Wesleyan, Lansing Community College, Madonna, Maryville (Mo.), Rose-Hulman, Vincennes and Western Michigan.
Fifteen men and 12 women will compete for the Boilermakers on Saturday, as the squad races at their second race of the season and several runners make their 2021 debuts.
Following the opening race of the campaign, the men's team is back in the national rankings and checks in at No. 30 in this week's USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll, and the women are receiving votes. The women's nine votes are its most since 2015. In the Great Lakes Region, the men are No. 6 and the women are No. 7.
LAST TIME OUT: SEASON-OPENER AT VALPO
The Purdue women won the Winrow Valparaiso Open and the men placed second on September 3 in Valparaiso, Indiana, to open the 2021 season. The Boilermaker women's team's victory was led by an individual win in the 5k race by junior Emma Tate. Purdue also was third-seventh and 11th. Individually for the men, Purdue was sixth, seventh and ninth-16th on the 6k course.
The Purdue women won the meet with 19 total points, ahead of Notre Dame, who was second with 41 points. UND won the men's team competition with 15 points, ahead of Purdue's 43.
Tate's victory was with a time 17:21.1. She bested the second-place finisher by more than six seconds to earn the win. In a tightly-contested race for second, sophomore Katelyn Wasson was just 0.01 seconds behind and finished third in 17:27.5. Senior Megan Slamkowski was close behind Wasson in fourth, in 17:30.8.
Junior Ian Hunter paced the Purdue men with a sixth-place finish in 18:40.6. He finished 0.01 seconds ahead of sophomore teammate Andrew Brandt, who was seventh in 18:40.7.
RETURN TO TERRE HAUTE
The Boilermakers ran at the John McNichols Invite in both 2018 and 2019. In 2018, the men won the event and the women were second, as current Boilermaker Curt Eckstein earned the individual victory for the men with a time of 24:52.9 and fellow 2021 senior Megan Slamkowski was 11th for the women. The following year, the men were fourth and the women placed seventh.
The team's last trip to the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course was for the 2019 NCAA Cross Country Championships, where the Boilermaker men had a record-setting performance. The team placed 11th overall at the NCAA meet, its best finish since 1950, and Jaret Carpenter and Eckstein collected All-America honors.
