WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Annie Drews and Team USA advanced to the Olympics quarterfinals after downing Italy in a five set thriller (21-25, 25-16, 25-27, 25-16, 15-12).
The victory moved the U.S. to a 4-1 record, topping the Pool B standings. With the record, the U.S. will play the Dominican Republic in the quarterfinals at 12 a.m. ET on August 4. The match can be streamed live HERE. The television replay will come later that evening on USA Network at 6 p.m. ET.
Drews led the team with 22 points and 19 kills after making her first career start in the Olympic games. In addition to adding three blocks in the match, the Elkhart, Indiana product's performance included four points in the fifth set alone to power Team USA to victory.
Drews played for the Boilermakers from 2012-15, where she was a two-time first team All-Big Ten honoree. Since graduating in 2016, the opposite has been a member of the U.S. national team since 2017. Additionally, she was named the 2019 USAV Female Indoor Player of the Year, 2019 FIVB Best Opposite and 2019 FIVB Most Valuable Player.
