WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Ahead of her arrival on campus later this fall, women's tennis incoming freshman Jamilah Snells has had an impressive run in foreign tournaments over the last few weeks.
The Miramar, Fla., native recently vaulted up to a career-high No. 1019 in the ITF World Singles Rankings, No. 1196 in the ITF Doubles Rankings and No. 1375 WTA Doubles Rankings. In doubles play, Snells competed in four ITF W15 Circuit events, reaching the quarterfinals of three doubles main draws.
Her most recent success was runner-up honors at the Antalya W15 in Turkey with playing partner Rachel Gailis. The duo rallied from a set down against Basak Eraydin and Ani Vengelova in the opening round to win 0-6, 6-4, 10-7. In the quarterfinals, the pair defeated Perla Nieuwboer and Costanza Traversi in a super tiebreak to set up a straight-sets victory over Oana Gavrila and Chelsea Vanhoutte, 6-4, 6-3, in the semifinals.
Snells' run came to an end in the final in a two-set loss to Federica Bilardo and Taylor Ng.
In singles events, Snells reached a pair of main draws and recorded a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win over Maria Fernanda Herazo Gonzalez from Columbia at the Antalya W15 in May. Gonzalez is currently ranked No. 570 in the WTA Singles Rankings and No. 428 in the ITF Singles Rankings, after reaching a career-high No. 272 in the world last year.
Snells will head to West Lafayette this fall as a part of a star-studded class featuring Tara Milic, Carmen Gallardo Guevara and Juana Larranaga.
