Purdue alumni and Olympic hopefuls Kaersten Meitz and Jinq En Phee are slated to race at the TYR Pro Swim Series Councilman Classic, hosted by USA Swimming in Indianapolis this weekend.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue alumni and Olympic hopefuls Kaersten Meitz and Jinq En Phee are slated to race at the TYR Pro Swim Series Councilman Classic, hosted by USA Swimming in Indianapolis this weekend.

The meet opened Wednesday evening with the 1500-meter freestyle and continues through Saturday evening at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI. Indianapolis' premier aquatic center is also hosting the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for diving next month (June 6-13).

Meitz is entered in the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle. She's seeded second in the 400 and among the top eight in the other two events. The 2018 Purdue graduate is a member of the USA Swimming National Team.

As a member of the Malaysian National Team and a 2016 Olympian, Phee is afforded the opportunity to compete in the USA Swimming's Pro Swim Series. She is entered in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and is seeded seventh in the 100.

Meitz headlines a group of Boilermakers – current student-athletes and alumni – slated to race at the U.S. Olympic Trials next month in Omaha. USA Swimming opted to split the trials into two waves of competitions this year. Time standards have been established for both waves and the top finishers from Wave I (June 4-7) have the opportunity to qualify for Wave II (June 13-20). Wave II will serve as the sole qualifier to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian National Championships – set for June 11 to 13 in Kuala Lumpur – will serve as the Olympic qualifier for Phee's home country. The 2020 Purdue graduate won gold in the 50 and 100 breast at the Southeast Asian Games in the December 2019. Since competing in the 100 breast at the 2016 Olympic Games, she also represented Malaysia at the FINA World Championships in July 2019 and FINA Swimming World Cup in October 2019.
