WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – For the second straight year, Purdue women's tennis senior Ena Babic was tabbed to the All-Big Ten Team, the league announced today. Seira Shimizu was named Purdue's Sportsmanship Award winner.
Babic's honor marked the fourth consecutive year that Purdue put a student-athlete on the all-conference squad.
The senior headlined the Boilermakers' lineup in singles and doubles in all matches this season. She posted a 9-11 mark in singles play, with a 6-9 record at No. 1 in duals. Her wins included a three-set victory over No. 107 Asuka Kawai from Illinois and No. 92 Rachel Hanford from Minnesota.
Despite the 9-11 mark in singles, six of her losses either went three sets or forced a tiebreak, including decisions against Big Ten Player and Freshman of the Year Alexa Noel from Iowa, No. 12 Irina Cantos from Ohio State, No. 91 Maria Shusharina from Northwestern and No. 125 Kristina Novak from Nebraska.
In doubles, Babic was 12-4 with a 8-3 clip in duals, all at No. 1. Her most regular playing partner was Csilla Fodor, who narrowly missed out on all-conference honors herself. The duo opened the season winning six of their first eight contests and only dropped one match since Feb. 26.
Shimizu split time between No. 3 and 4 singles, picking up three victories on the year. In doubles, the Saitama, Japan, native played exclusively at No. 3 with partners Rut Galindo and Zeynep Naz Ozturk, notching four wins during the campaign.
