WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue men's cross country team is ranked No. 20 in the latest NCAA Division I Men's Cross Country National Coaches' Poll, unveiled today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The Boilermakers are coming off a third-place finish at the 2020-21 Big Ten Cross Country Championships on Jan. 30. The team debuted at No. 22 in the season's first USTFCCCA poll on Oct. 27, and rose two spots in this week's rankings after they opened the season Saturday at the conference championship meet.

Purdue has been ranked in all four national polls this season.

The men also check in at No. 4 in the Great Lakes Region, while the women's team is No. 9. Five Big Ten men's programs appear in the top-30 nationally, led by No. 11 Wisconsin, which won the league title. No. 17 Michigan, No. 18 Indiana and No. 26 Michigan State join Purdue in the poll. Seven women's teams are in the top-30.

Additionally, senior Brody Smith and junior Rachel Anderson were named Purdue's men's and women's recipients of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The duo were honored for distinguishing themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior.

At the Big Ten Championships at the Blue River Cross Country Course in Shelbyville, Indiana, the Boilermakers earned their third consecutive top-four team finish, a first for the program since 1948. Purdue has recorded a top-five conference finish four years in a row after it did not finish in the top-five from 1987-2016.

Senior Curt Eckstein came in fifth overall to pace the squad. It is the third year in a row a Boilermaker has finished fifth in the conference championship race, and he was recognized with All-Big Ten First Team accolades.

The Big Ten Network will air the championship four times on television. The first broadcast is set for Feb. 6 at 12:30 p.m. ET, followed by Feb. 7 at 8 a.m., Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. and Feb. 9 at 3 p.m.

Up next, qualifying Boilermakers will compete at the NCAA men's and women's cross country championships, set for March 15 at the OSU Cross Country Course in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Additionally, the Purdue track & field team returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 6, at Indiana's Hoosier Hills Invite.
