ARLINGTON, Texas - Purdue Athletics Hall of Famer and former women's basketball standout Shereka Wright has been named the head coach at the University of Texas Arlington. The Copperas Cove was announced as the 10th head coach of the Mavericks on Friday and will make her first formal appearance next Thursday.
Wright was a three-year starter for the Boilermakers from 2002-04, amassing 2,251 points for the second most in program history. She is one of three players at Purdue to average more than 15 points per game, joining Stephanie White and MaChelle Joseph. She continues to hold the record for most free throws in game with 16 in 2003, most points scored in a Big Ten Tournament game with 31 in 2004, career free throws with 776 and ranks sevenths in program history with 793 career rebounds.
Wright was instrumental in leading the Boilermakers to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances, three Sweet 16s, two Elight Eights and the 2001 National Championship Game. The Boilermakers claimed the 2001 and 2002 Big Ten Regular Season Championships and the 2003 and 2004 Big Ten Tournament titles.
Prior to her return to Texas, Wright was the associate head coach at Vanderbilt, on staff with fellow Purdue alumnae White and Kelly Komara. The 13th overall pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft also spent time at Alabama and Texas Tech as an assistant.
