PISCATAWAY, N.J. -
Senior Dylan Lydy, junior Devin Schroder and freshman Kendall Coleman all advanced to the semifinals to lead the Purdue wrestling team in the first session of the 2020 Big Ten Championships, hosted by Rutgers on Saturday. Nine of the 10 Boilermaker wrestlers are still alive in the brackets as the team is in eighth place with 31.5 points.

Lydy had just one match at 174 pounds in the morning session, but it was a tense one as he went all the way to a second sudden victory period against No. 6 seed Kaleb Romero of Ohio State. The two wrestlers traded escapes in regulation and a set of tiebreakers to make it 2-2 going into a 10th minute of competition, where Lydy got to Romero's left leg on a reshot and finished the takedown for the win. Lydy advances to face No. 2 seed Mark Hall in tonight's session.

Like his senior teammate, Schroder only had one match in the opening session, but he made the most of it. Facing No. 10 seed Alex Thomsen of Nebraska in the quarterfinals at 125 pounds, Schroder reeled off 15 straight points in 3:40 to notch the technical fall and advance. He scored twice on his feet, and notched 10 back points to account for the scoring. He'll meet No. 6 seed Michael DeAugustino of Northwestern in the semifinals tonight.

Coleman posted a pair of wins to roll to the semifinals at 157 pounds, defeating No. 14 seed Fernie Silva and No. 11 seed Elijah Cleary of Ohio State to start his tournament. Coleman scored twice in the first and again in the second against Silva, adding an escape and a riding-time point, and used a second period takedown to record his 3-2 victory over Cleary. Coleman advances to face No. 7 seed Peyton Robb of Nebraska in the semifinals, who advanced with an upset win over No. 2 seed Kaleb Young of Iowa.

With their advancement to the semifinals, Lydy, Schroder and Coleman all secured spots in the 2020 NCAA Championships.

Saturday night's session starts with a full round of wrestlebacks, all with placing points on the line. Freshman Travis Ford-Melton lost his opening match, but bounced back with a 9-1 major decision over King Sandoval of Maryland in the consolation bracket and will face Nebraska's No. 6 seed Ridge Lovett tonight. Sophomore Parker Filius posted the reverse, topping No. 9 seed Cole Mattin of Michigan by major decision 15-4, before falling to the top seed Nick Lee. Filius will face No. 10 seed Alec McKenna of Northwestern in session two. Junior Max Lyon rebounded from a first-round loss at 184 pounds, coming back to post an 8-0 major decision over Maryland's Kyle Jasenski. Lyon will meet No. 5 seed Billy Janzer of Rutgers in the second session.

Junior Griffin Parriott and freshman Thomas Penola both fell in their first match of the tournament, but receiving a bye in the wrestlebacks and will compete in session two for placing. Parriott will face No. 9 seed Yahya Thomas of Northwestern at 149 pounds and Penola meets 10th-seeded Alex Esposito of Rutgers at heavyweight. Senior Nate Limmex had an unfortunate fate, losing his first match of the tournament and suffering an injury that left him unable to continue competing.

Saturday's second session is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. ET, with all matches being streamed live on BTN+ and FloWrestling.
