WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue fall semester classes begin Monday, and academics always are at the forefront for the football program.
Through the spring 2019 semester, the Boilermakers boasted a composite grade-point average of 2.93. Last season, a school-record 29 football players earned Academic All-Big Ten honors.
"Academics will never take a backseat in our program," head coach Jeff Brohm says. "We want to win games and championships, but our ultimate goal is for each of our players to earn his degree and be prepared for life after football."
Five current Boilermakers have earned their bachelor's degrees: Markus Bailey (movement and sport sciences), Danny Carollo (selling and sales management), Matt McCann (building construction management technology), Elijah Sindelar (electrical engineering) and graduate transfer Ben Holt (interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis on business at Western Kentucky).
Bailey, Holt and McCann each are working on their master's degree in leadership this fall, while Sindelar is working on a master's in electrical engineering and Carollo is pursuing a minor in communication.
DEPARTMENT-WIDE SUCCESS
Purdue student-athletes have maintained better than a 3.0 cumulative GPA for 21 consecutive semesters, and they regularly perform equal to or better than the general student body. Following the spring 2019 semester, the cumulative GPA for all current Purdue student-athletes was 3.12. The four-year graduation success rate stands at 85 percent. More impressive is the fact that 90 percent of those student-athletes who complete their eligibility at Purdue receive a diploma. Student-athletes who graduated in May of 2018 realized a 97 percent placement rate.
"I couldn't be more proud of our young people and the way they are able to manage the challenging academics, the strong academics here at Purdue," athletics director Mike Bobinski says. "Clearly, it's to their great credit that they get it done. We've got a great team of folks in the academic support area that help them, our faculty are great, and ultimately it's up to our coaches to identify young people to bring to Purdue that have the capability and the desire. Our academic accomplishment is very strong and ultimately the one we are most-proud of and the one that has the most lasting impact of anything we do."
