Dive-by-Dive Scoring / FINA World Championships
GWANGJU, South Korea – Purdue diver Brandon Loschiavo improved upon his list score and finish across all three full rounds of 10-meter competition, placing eighth in the final in first career individual event at the FINA World Championships.
Loschiavo finished 12th in the preliminary and ninth in the semifinal, the latter showing clinching a 2020 Olympic bid for the U.S. in the event. Loschiavo's teammate David Dinsmore, the 2017 NCAA 10-meter champion, did likewise as a fellow finalist.
Purdue's quartet of David Boudia, Ben Bramley, Steele Johnson and Loschiavo accounted for a trio of top-eight finishes for Team USA at the World Championships this week. Boudia (3-meter) and Loschiavo both earned the important 2020 Olympic quota spots for the U.S. Bramley and Johnson were eighth together as a 10-meter synchro team in their first international competition as a duo.
Loschiavo posted a list score of 470.10 points in the final. He scored 72 or higher on all six of his dives, including two that went for more than 80 points. He scored 84.60 points on his armstand double back with 2 ½ twists, a dive he missed in both the preliminaries and semifinals Friday. His reverse 3 ½ tuck scored 81.60 points in the final.
"I was actually very excited because this was a lot better than the prelim and the semi. I kind of just went into the final with an open mind and just let anything happen and go with the flow," Loschiavo said. "I was very happy with my mindset today."
Loschiavo's list score in the final was a 68.7-point improvement on his prelim showing (401.40) Friday, when he placed 12th of 47. He qualified for the final with a score of 433.70 in the semifinal.
Finishing in the top eight should also make Loschiavo eligible for FINA Diving World Series events leading up to the 2020 Olympic Games. The rising senior is the two-time defending Big Ten champion on 10-meter. In May, he was victorious on the tower at the USA Diving Senior Nationals to qualify for the World Championships for the second time.
Saturday's competition marked the conclusion of the Olympic diving events at the FINA World Championships. The 27-meter high diving competition begins Monday at 1 a.m. ET and continues Tuesday at 11 p.m. ET. Alumni David Colturi Steven LoBue are among the three American men competing. LoBue is the defending gold medalist at the World Championships.
