Dive-by-Dive Scoring / FINA World Championships
GWANGJU, South Korea – Purdue divers Ben Bramley and Steele Johnson were finalists for the United States in their first international event together as a 10-meter synchro team, placing eighth in event at the FINA World Championships on Monday.
They improved on their prelim score (373.80) by 10 points in the final (383.79) but did not move up in the final standings after also placing eighth in the prelim. They scored more than 70 points on three of their four optionals in the final, including an inward 3 ½ that went for 75.84 points in round 3 of both the prelim and final.
"It was a good experience to be on the world stage and get this opportunity to compete against the best people and have that pressure," said Bramley, who was competing at his first World Championships. "Obviously I would have hoped to do a little bit better, but at least now I know what I need to do. I have this experience under my belt, so hopefully I'll be more relaxed next time."
The U.S. will have another opportunity to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in 10-meter synchro at the FINA Diving World Cup, which is set for April 21 to 26 and is also in Tokyo. En route to winning silver together in the event at the 2016 Olympics, David Boudia and Johnson earned Team USA's Olympic bid with their fourth-place showing at the FINA Diving World Cup in February 2016.
A pair of Boilermakers represented the U.S. in men's 10-meter synchro at a third-straight World Championships. Johnson has been part of all three synchro teams – pairing with Boudia in 2015, Brandon Loschiavo in 2017 and Bramley this year. All three duos were finalists and finished among the top 10 at the biennial international showcase.
Bramley and Johnson represented a new synchro team that was formed not long after Johnson returned to training in the spring from the multiple foot surgeries that sidelined him for most of the 2019-20 school year. As a freshman for Purdue this year, Bramley was a bronze medalist on the tower at the 2019 Big Ten Championships and also a finalist in the event at the NCAA Championships.
Bramley and Johnson have also been selected to represent USA Diving at the Pan American Games next month (Aug. 1-5) in Lima, Peru. They'll compete together again as a 10-meter synchro team and also dive individually on the tower.
Bramley and Johnson were the first of the school-record eight Boilermakers set to compete at the FINA World Championships this year. Up next for Purdue is alumnus David Boudia competing on 3-meter. The prelim is set for 9 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

Only the top three teams qualified their countries for the 2020 Olympic Games. China's Chen Aisen and Cao Yuan won gold at 486.93, and Russia's Viktor Minibaev and Aleksandr Bondar scored 444.60 for silver. British divers Tom Daley and Matthew Lee were third at 425.91.8th in the world with @brotherben_ on the 10m Synchro! After two surgeries, and less than 4 months of training, I couldn't ask for more. Next stop: Pan American Games ??
