WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Maxwell Football Club announced wide receiver Rondale Moore is on the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award and linebacker Markus Bailey is on the watch list for the Bednarik Award.
The Maxwell Award, named in honor of Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell, has been given to America's College Player of the Year since 1937. Maxwell's contributions to the game of football were extensive, including time as a player, a sportswriter and an official.
The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995. Chuck Bednarik, former standout at Penn and with the Philadelphia Eagles, is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of '69 and the NFL Hall of Fame's Class of '67.
Moore, a sophomore from New Albany, Indiana, electrified college football as a true freshman in 2018. He became merely the third player in Big Ten history to record 100 or more receptions, finishing with 114 catches for 1,258 yards and 12 touchdowns. He broke the school record for all-purpose yards for both a game (313 vs. Northwestern) and in a season (2,215) en route to winning the 2018 Paul Hornung Award as the nation's most versatile player. He was named a consensus All-American last season, becoming the first true freshman in Big Ten history to be so honored.
Bailey, a fifth-year senior from Columbus, Ohio, enters his final season at Purdue 18th in school history in career tackles (313), tied for 13th in solo tackles (210) and tied for 16th in sacks (12.5). He led the Boilermakers with 115 total tackles last season, including 9.0 for loss with a team-high 5.5 sacks. Bailey was voted captain by his teammates prior to last season.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced October 29, 2019, while the three finalists for each award will be unveiled November 25, 2019. The winners of the 2019 Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 12, 2019.
