AUSTIN, Texas – Fueled by a program-record, the Purdue track & field team sent two events – the 100-meter dash and the 4x100-meter relay – to the NCAA Championships finals on the opening day of competition.
The fastest man in Purdue history became even faster after breaking his own 100-meter dash record. Timing in at 10.06 seconds, Waseem Williams shaved off four one-hundredths of a second off his previous school-best (wind: +2.6) to earn the finals bid. Williams received the automatic qualifying spot by finishing second in his heat and will run again at 9:22 p.m. ET Friday for the NCAA title.
Meanwhile, the 4x100-meter relay squad of Tamar Greene, Samson Colebrooke, Justin Becker and Williams will take the stage one final time after advancing with 38.94 seconds. After setting the program-record at the NCAA East Regional, the quartet clocked in the second-fastest time in Purdue history during the national championship semifinals. The relay team is scheduled for an 8:32 p.m ET start Friday.
Two members of the relay team – Greene and Williams – will be competing in multiple final events. In addition to Williams racing in the 100m dash, Greene is slated for the triple jump on Friday as well.
Isaiah Martin will be the lone Boilermaker competing Thursday, as the decathlete will compete in the final five events. Martin produced three personal-bests on his way to maintaining 13th-place with 3,901 points. The freshman took a day's best of fifth-place in the long jump following a mark of 7.26-meters and also recorded PRs in the shot put (12.36-meters), high jump (1.92-meters) and 400-meter dash (49.12 seconds).
Colebrooke and Brian Faust concluded their 2019 season following their 200- and 400-meter events, respectively, in addition to the 4x400-meter relay. Colebrooke was just three one-hundredths of a second shy of his personal-record, set at the regional, after crossing the finish line in 20.49 seconds. Meanwhile, Faust registered a time of 46.62 seconds in his final individual event of the year.
The 4x400-meter relay team (Shawndail McLaren, Faust, Colebrooke and Malcolm Dotson) secured a time of 3:07.65 in the semifinals, which checked in at No. 6 in the Purdue record books. The time marked the third time this season the Boilermakers ran that fast or better.
