MINNEAPOLIS
– Purdue's Brandon Loschiavo was equally excellent with both of his partners in synchronized 10-meter, winning his fifth career national title as part of a two-medal performance Wednesday at the USA Diving Winter National Championships.

Across two lists of competition, less than one point separated the cumulative scores of David Dinsmore and Loschiavo (825.03), and Steele Johnson and Loschiavo (824.10). For the second night in a row, a big score on the final dive of the final was the difference in a very tight competition. Dinsmore & Loschiavo finished the event with an 89.64, the highest-scoring dive of the day by any of the duos competing.

Dinsmore & Loschiavo also won the 10-meter synchro title together at the USA Diving Senior National Championships in May. But it was silver medalists, and Loschiavo's Purdue teammates, Ben Bramley and Johnson that earned the U.S. bid to the FINA World Championships after they had the top two-list score. At Winter Nationals, event winners in the synchronized events are determined by cumulative across the prelims and finals.

Dinsmore & Loschiavo clinched the U.S. berth to the 2020 FINA Diving World Cup. They'll have an opportunity to earn an Olympic bid for the USA in 10-meter synchro when they compete in Tokyo in April.

Johnson demonstrated his versatility over the first two days of Winter Nationals, winning synchro medals in springboard and platform events with two different partners. Tuesday, David Boudia and Johnson won their first national title together in 3-meter synchro. Johnson won his 13th career medal at Winter Nationals on Wednesday.

Loschiavo won four 10-meter synchro medals and one of each color at USA Diving's national championship meets this year. His gold-silver double Wednesday also gave the Boilermakers three synchro medals for the second night in a row. Four of his five career USA Diving national titles have come in synchronized 10-meter. He has now won two each with Dinsmore and Johnson. Loschiavo now has five career medals at Winter Nationals.

Loschiavo is a two-time Big Ten champion in platform diving for Purdue. He opted to exercise an Olympic practice waiver for the 2019-20 NCAA season and will have the option of returning to the Boilermakers' active roster as a senior for the 2020-21 campaign. Dinsmore competed collegiately for the University of Miami and was the 2017 NCAA champion on the platform.

Johnson & Loschiavo led by 7.71 points entering the final round, with both of Loschiavo's teams set to dive a back 2 ½ with 2 ½ twists. Johnson & Loschiavo came through with 81 points, while Dinsmore & Loschiavo closed out the competition with the big score of 89.64 to clinch the victory and World Cup berth.

"I was honestly just trying to do the best I could individually and then let Steele and Dins take their own path. It was a little nerve-wracking, but I wasn't really paying attention to the scores. I was just trying to do my back twister as well as I could," Loschiavo said. "It went pretty well with Steele, but I was able to tweak it a little bit with Dins, and it ended up being a little better in the end. It was a great competition."

Dinsmore & Loschiavo held a 4.05-point lead after the prelim and it was a big reason why they won the event despite their list score dropping by 6.39 points in the final. Johnson & Loschiavo were more consistent across their two lists, with only a .78-point improvement variance in the final.

Of the five synchro teams competing in the final, Johnson & Loschiavo were placed first in the diving order instead of fourth to provide Loschiavo with more time to prepare for his second dive of each round with Dinsmore.

Individual events at the USA Diving Winter Nationals begin Thursday with the men on 3-meter and the women on 10-meter. Joe Cifelli, Greg Duncan and Maggie Merriman are the Boilermakers scheduled to compete Thursday.
