WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 20th-ranked Purdue wrestling team will wrestle its final non-conference dual of the season Thursday, heading to Southern Illinois Edwardsville for a 7 p.m. ET start at First Community Arena at the Vadalabene Center. The Boilermakers are 6-1 on the season in dual competition, riding a three-match win streak into the week and looking to win their 12th straight over the Cougars.
"We've had an outstanding first semester and we're looking to end that on a high note," said Boilermaker head coach Tony Ersland. "We continue to just focus on the next thing in front of us, and this week that's SIUE. We'll take care of business Thursday and then hopefully enjoy a well-deserved break."
PURDUE LINEUP & RANKINGS
The Boilermakers are flaunting some impressive tournament rankings, ranked anywhere between No. 10 and No. 15 in the nation, and has half the lineup ranked in the top-10 at their respective weight classes. TrackWrestling has Purdue tied for 10th, while WIN Magazine has the Boilermakers at 11, InterMat has them tabbed at 12, The Open Mat ranked them No. 13 and FloWrestling has the team at 15.
LAST TIME OUT
The Boilermakers put together an outstanding performance at the 2019 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, tying for fifth place and scoring a program-record 92.5 points. Five individuals earned spots on the podium, led by senior Dylan Lydy who claimed the 174-pound title and became the fourth CKLV Champion in program history. Senior Christian Brunner and junior Devin Schroder took second at 197 and 125 pounds, respectively, while junior Griffin Parriott and freshman Kendall Coleman posted respective fourth-place efforts at 149 and 157.
PURDUE NOTES
• The Boilermakers have five individuals ranked in the top-10 of their respective weight classes for the first time on record, and have earned their top team ranking since 1998.
• Lydy repeated as the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week last Tuesday, sharing the weekly honor with Minnesota's Brayton Lee. After going from 2015 to 2019 without a weekly conference award winner, the Boilermakers have already garnered three this season, with Coleman nabbing the third.
• Lydy's consensus No. 4 national ranking at 174 is the Boilermakers' highest since Ben Wissel held the No. 3 spot at 184 pounds in 2006, and rose as high as No. 2 in the country via InterMat that season.
• Lydy didn't surrender a single takedown at the CKLV Invitational, and has given up only one all season.
• Schroder now has the top ranking of his collegiate career, tabbed as high as fifth in the country at 125 pounds.
• His six technical falls rank best in the Big Ten and second in the NCAA (via @Cauli_Friend).
