Purdue Divers at the USA Diving Winter National Championships

Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center / Minneapolis, Minnesota

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – With 10 Boilermakers competing in a combined seven events, Purdue is well represented by both its active student-athletes and alumni in attendance this week at the USA Diving Winter National Championships.

Action is set for Tuesday through Sunday at the University of Minnesota's Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. The synchronized events are slated for Tuesday and Wednesday. Individual events are scheduled for Thursday through Sunday. With 2020 being an Olympic year, the focus is on 3-meter and 10-meter at this edition of Winter Nationals.

David Boudia and Steele Johnson are among the Purdue alumni competing this week. They both won NCAA titles at Minnesota's pool. Boudia swept the springboard events at the 2011 NCAA Championships, his final collegiate event before turning pro. Johnson was victorious on 3-meter at the 2018 Championships, winning his fifth and final title in the process.

Overall, it's the fifth time this decade that a Big Ten Conference aquatic center is hosting the USA Diving Winter Nationals.

Ben Bramley, Emily Bretscher, Greg Duncan, Brandon Loschiavo, Maggie Merriman and Maycey Vieta are Purdue's active student-athletes competing. Joe Cifelli (2016-19) and Max Showalter (2016-17) join Boudia (2009-11) and Johnson (2015-18) as the program alumni scheduled to compete.

This year's Winter Nationals will serve as the USA Diving qualifier for the FINA Diving World Cup, set for April 21-26 in Tokyo. The Diving World Cup is the final opportunity for divers to earn Olympic quota berths for their countries. Boudia and Johnson clinched a 10-meter synchro berth for the U.S. with their performance at the 2016 FINA Diving World Cup in Rio de Janeiro. They went on to win silver together in the event at the Olympic Games.

The USA Diving Winter Nationals became a regular meet on the USA Diving calendar beginning in February 2010. The meet moved to December during the 2011-12 school year and was not held in December 2012 as that Olympic cycle came to a close.

Divers that have competed for Purdue at some point have combined to win 42 medals – 17 individual, 25 synchro – at the Winter Nationals this decade, claiming at least one medal every year the meet has been held. That total of 42 includes medals won by divers before they officially enrolled at Purdue. Boudia and Johnson have both won 11 career medals at Winter Nationals.

Four different Boilermakers medaled at Winter Nationals last year. Boudia (gold on 3-meter), Cifelli (silver on 1-meter), Bretscher (bronze on 3-meter) and Loschiavo (bronze on 10-meter) teamed up for Purdue's most medals in the individual events at any Winter Nationals this decade.
