WACO, Texas – The No.14 Boilermakers ended their season in the Sweet 16, falling to No.1 Baylor 3-1 Friday afternoon. The Bears won the match on their home court 25-12, 23-25, 25-15, 25-17.
Junior Caitlyn Newton put down a match-high 19 kills and added four digs and a block. Redshirt Blake Mohler and sophomore Jael Johnson each chipped in eight kills apiece. Johnson's eight kills matched her career-high posted against Michigan State (11/29/19). Freshman Emma Ellis followed with six kills, while sophomore Grace Cleveland added five.
Defensively, sophomore Marissa Hornung paced the Boilermakers with a match-high 15 digs. Junior Jena Otec followed with seven digs. At the net, Purdue was paced by five blocks from Mohler (1 solo/4 assisted).
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 (12-25) | The nationally ranked foes traded through the first eight points, until a Purdue service error sparked a 5-2 run for the Bears. Limiting the Boilermakers to only seven kills in the frame, Baylor improved to 16-11 and secured the set with a 9-1 run.
SET 2 (25-23) | Keeping its momentum rolling, Baylor opened with an 8-4 advantage. Purdue answered with a solo block from Mohler as the Boilermakers rallied to tie the frame at 12. Purdue and Baylor tied the set five more times. Knotted at 18, Purdue collected two points behind the serve of sophomore Emma Terwilliger. Leading 20-19, Purdue closed the set with kills from Ellis, Johnson, Newton and Mohler.
SET 3 (15-25) | Much like the first set, the teams tied through the first eight points, until a trio of Boilermaker attack errors gave the lead to Baylor. Plagued by five more team miscues, Purdue would not able to overcome Baylor's .440 hitting percentage, falling by double digits.
SET 4 (17-25) | Fighting to extend the match, Purdue jumped out to a 3-2 edge with pair of kills from Mohler. However, the Boilermaker lead was short lived as Baylor took advantage of a pair of Purdue errors to tie the set 5-5. Purdue and Baylor traded the next four points to knot the score at 7-7. A pair of kills from Gia Milana ended the back-and-forth, giving Baylor an 11-8 lead. A Newton kill and a Cleveland ace brought Purdue within one at 12-11, but a 4-2 Bear run kept the momentum in Baylor's favor. Six Boilermaker miscues kept Baylor ahead for a 25-17 set victory.
