Carpenter, Slamkowski Named Sportsmanship Honorees

Jaret Carpenter and Megan Slamkowski repeat as Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honorees

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue cross country runners Jaret Carpenter and Megan Slamkowski were recognized by the Big Ten Conference on Tuesday as the Sportsmanship Award honorees.

The Big Ten Sportsmanship award honors one male and one female student-athlete from each program. Individuals are chosen based on their sportsmanship and ethical behavior, academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

In addition to the honor, Carpenter received first-team All-Big Ten honors on Sunday with his fifth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships. Carpenter, who also earned the Sportsmanship nod in 2017, will enter the NCAA Great Lakes Regional looking to defend his first-place finish earned a year ago.

Slamkowski notched the Sportspanship honor for the second consecutive year. The junior placed 55th at the Big Ten Championships, crossing the finish line in 21:28.3 to be the second-fastest Boilermaker in the race.

In two weeks, the Boilermakers will return to action in Madison, Wisconsin, on Nov. 15 for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, where Purdue will look to send runners on to the national championships.
