WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Only four Purdue football coaches have been victorious in their first three games against Indiana.

Jeff Brohm looks to become the fifth Saturday when the Boilermakers host the Hoosiers in the 95th battle for the Old Oaken Bucket and the 122nd overall clash between the two schools located 116 miles apart.

Growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, Brohm has come to appreciate what is regarded as one of the nation's fantastic rivalries.

"I know the game has a lot of history and tradition," Brohm said. "It's an important football game for the university, for bragging rights, for recruiting. It's an opportunity for both fan bases and players to get together. Most of them know each other. They go out there and compete, have a good time with it, hope to come out on the right side."

The Boilermakers have been victorious the last two seasons - 31-24 in 2017 and 28-21 in 2018 - and in doing so secured a bowl berth.

"The last two years, the win has not only meant a lot, but it meant you got to go to a bowl game," Brohm said. "I don't know what the record was before, how many we lost before that. It's always good to win that last game, especially when there's a lot riding on it. That's what made the last two seasons very fun, is the season came down to win and you advance or you lose and you go home. We were fortunate the last two years to pull it off."

Prior to Saturday's game, which will kick off at noon ET and be televised by ESPN2, the Boilermakers will honor their seniors.

"Our seniors that have been here, they've been through a lot," Brohm said. "A lot of these guys have seen all the ups and downs they could see. They've had a great attitude with it. They've done everything we've asked, worked extremely hard. I think they'll be very productive football players and citizens when it's all said and done. We'd like to try to finish the season strong for them."

Purdue leads the all-time series against Indiana by a convincing 74-41-6 margin. The 121 all-time meetings rank tied for sixth among the most-played FBS college football rivalries. Since their inaugural meeting in 1891, Purdue and Indiana have played every year except for 1895, 1896, 1903, 1906, 1907, 1918 and 1919.

Since 1925, Purdue and Indiana have played annually for the Old Oaken Bucket. The Boilermakers lead the Bucket portion of the all-time series 60-31-3, including 15 wins in the last 22 showdowns.

The four Purdue coaches to beat Indiana in their first three games are Andy Smith (1913-15), Mal Elward (1937-39), Alex Agase (1973-75) and Joe Tiller (1997-99).
