WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Kicker J.D. Dellinger and wide receiver David Bell have been named the Big Ten Special Teams Player and Freshman of the Week, respectively. The league recognition is the second in Dellinger's career and the third of the season for Bell.
Dellinger booted a game-winning 39-yard field with three seconds remaining to help the Boilermakers knock off Northwestern 24-22 in Evanston, Illinois, on Saturday. The field goal was Dellinger's second career game-winner in either late in the fourth quarter or overtime (also at Illinois in 2016). The successful kick improved the junior to 26 of 30 for his career on field goal attempts up to 39 yards.
Bell caught a career-high 14 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown in the come-from-behind victory over the Wildcats. The reception total was the most by a Purdue freshman since at least 1997 and a team-high for the year. Bell capped off a nine-play, 76-yard scoring drive to open the second half with a 13-yard touchdown catch and had four total receptions for 30 yards on the drive.
Dellinger and Bell's recognition mark the sixth and seventh weekly honors for a Purdue player this season. The Boilermakers had a school-record 10 student-athletes selected Big Ten Players of the Week last year.
