FINA Swimming World Cup Budapest
BUDAPEST, Hungary – Kaersten Meitz's silver medal in the 400-meter freestyle highlighted the combined half dozen top-12 finishes by Meitz and fellow Boilermaker Jinq En Phee at the three-day FINA Swimming World Cup meet this weekend.
Meitz earned second swims in the 200- and 400-meter free. She also placed fourth overall in Sunday's 800 free after being seeded among the top eight in the event. Phee was also a finalist in the 50 breaststroke Sunday.
Meitz won her third international medal of the year Friday, adding World Cup silver to the pair of golds she won for the United States at the World University Games in Italy. The USA Swimming National Team member was also second (of 28) in the 400 free prelims this weekend. She then improved on her prelim time (4:14.22) by 1.96 seconds in the final (4:12.28).
Phee was fifth of 39 in the 50-meter breast prelims (31.92) to earn one of the eight berths in the finals. She settled for eighth overall in the event with a time of 32.09. In the prelims of her other events, the Purdue senior also placed 10th (of 27) in the 200 breast and 12th (of 45) in the 100 breast. Phee is a member of the Malaysian National Team and was an Olympian in 2016.
Purdue alumni and native Europeans Francesca Marr (2012-15) and Nika Petric (2013-16) were able to meet up with Meitz (2015-18) and Phee (2017-20) in Budapest this weekend.
Purdue swimming & diving opens its season the weekend of Oct. 18 to 19 with a pair of home meets.
