The No.21 men out-ran six opponents ranked above them on its way to a fourth-place finish

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Lightning struck at the Joe Piane Invite, when the No. 21-ranked Purdue men's cross country team snagged fourth-place finish in a stacked field, which included 14 programs ranked or receiving votes.

The men closed the 8k with 178 points, out-running six higher-ranked opponents – No. 9 Notre Dame, No. 10 Wisconsin, No. 13 Colorado State, No. 16 Michigan, No. 18 Wyoming and No. 19 Indiana – to the finish line. Only No. 4 Colorado (71 points), No. 14 Ole Miss (107 points) and No. 15 North Carolina State (177 points) finished ahead of the Boilermakers.

Three runners placed in the top 20, meanwhile the top five men's Boilermakers finished 76th or better.

Senior Jaret Carpenter ran the fastest five mile race of his collegiate career on his way to 13th-place with a time of 23:35.41. Close behind in 16th-place was Brody Smith, who also earned a personal-best of 23:41.83 and Curt Eckstein at 20th-place with a time of 23:48.71. Eckstein's time was just over a second shy of his Purdue best.

Meanwhile, the women's team finished 20th-place overall with a score of 481 points. Halderman led the women's team after finishing 66nd. The redshirt-senior shaved off 42 seconds from her last 5k time at the John McNichols Invite to cross the finish line in 17:16.05. Just two spots behind her in 68th-place was Megan Slamkowski who earned a time of 17:17.37.

Purdue will return to action in two weeks for the Nuttycombe Invitational, hosted by Wisconsin on Friday, October 18.
