WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue cross country program begins its postseason journey with the 2019 Men's and Women's Big Ten Cross Country Championships on Sunday, November 3rd. The meet, hosted by Ohio State, is set to take place at the Ohio State University Golf Club in Columbus.
The races will begin with the men's 8K at 10:45 a.m. ET followed by the women's 6K at 11:45 a.m. ET on Sunday. The meet will be available to watch live on FloTrack with the purchase of a subscription.
In one of its strongest overall seasons in program history, the men are set to enter the championship with a No. 9 national ranking – not only the best USTFCCCA poll ranking in program history, but also the highest ranking among Big Ten programs.
The men will look to secure its first Big Ten title in 76 years (last: 1943) and its fourth overall in Purdue history. Among the league competition, the team will compete against No. 13 nationally-ranked Indiana with No. 14 Wisconsin and No. 17 Michigan.
A year ago, the men's team recorded second –place (88 points) at the Big Ten Championships with Jaret Carpenter leading the team after finishing fifth with a time of 23:44.1 to earn first-team All-Big Ten honors. The second-team All-Big Ten honoree Curt Eckstein also secured a top-10 finish after coming in ninth with a time of 23:47.7. Overall, Purdue had five Boilermakers produce top-30 finishes in the race.
The women's team enters the weekend looking to improve upon its 10th-place finish at the Big Ten Championships last year. Jenna Halderman led the returning Boilermakers with a time of 21:25.02 in the 6k and a 45th-place finish, after slashing 27 seconds off her time from the year prior.
The women, ranked No. 8 in the Great Lakes Region, will face eight nationally-ranked Big Ten programs, including two top-10 programs in No. 7 Wisconsin and No. 8 Michigan.
This season, the Purdue men's program finished sixth at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invite and fourth at the Joe Piane Invite, which included 14 and 20 ranked programs, respectively. Before earning the No. 9 national ranking, the Boilermakers outran then-ranked No. 7 Oregon and No. 8 Portland at Nuttycombe.
