WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue men's basketball team is ranked No. 23 in the preseason Associated Press Top 25 poll released earlier today.
The Boilermakers garnered 230 votes to sit in 23rd place, four points behind 22nd-ranked LSU and 20 points ahead of No. 24-ranked Auburn. Purdue is one of four Big Ten teams ranked in the initial poll of the 2019-20 season.
Among top-25 teams, Purdue will face No. 1-ranked Michigan State, No. 7-ranked Maryland, No. 11-ranked Virginia, No. 18-ranked Ohio State and No. 25-ranked VCU. Purdue opponents that are receiving votes include Tennessee (28th; possible), Marquette (29th), Florida State (30th; possible), Illinois (33rd) and Michigan (43rd).
With the ranking, Purdue has been mentioned in the preseason top 25 poll in five straight seasons for the first time in school history. The Boilermakers, who are one of four teams nationally to make four straight Sweet 16s, were ranked 23rd in 2015-16, 15th in 2016-17, 20th in 2017-18 and 24th a year ago.
