WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Five Boilermakers were among the 240 players selected on the opening day of the 2020 XFL Draft on Tuesday. The draft will continue Wednesday with defensive backs and open pool players available.
DeAngelo Yancey (2013-16) was the first Boilermaker selected, getting picked with the No. 3 overall selection by the New York Guardians. Yancey finished his collegiate career with 141 receptions for 2,344 yards and 20 touchdowns. He was a fifth-round pick by the Green Bay Packers in the 2017 National Football League Draft and spent brief stints with the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans in the NFL.
Defensive end Austin Larkin (2016-17) will join Yancey in New York after being selected with the Guardians' third pick in the front seven portion (23rd overall). Larkin wrapped up his two-year Purdue career with 41 total tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss with 2.5 sacks.
Defensive end Gelen Robinson (2014-17) went to the Dallas Renegades with their sixth pick in the front seven portion (41st overall). Robinson, the son of All-American Purdue basketball player Glenn Robinson, finished his Boilermaker career with 164 total tackles, including 33.5 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks.
Center Kirk Barron (2015-18) was picked by the Seattle Dragons with their seventh selection in the offensive line portion of the draft (50th overall). Barron was a mainstay in the Purdue lineup, starting 39 consecutive games while helping block for a pair of bowl teams.
Defensive end Danny Ezechukwu (2014-17) will join Barron in Seattle after being tabbed by the Dragons with their eighth pick in the front seven (62nd overall). Ezechukwu, who played both linebacker and defensive end at Purdue, finished his four-year career with the Boilermakers with 224 tackles, including 15.5 tackles for loss with 7.5 sacks. He appeared in 49 career games, making 35 starts.
Former Boilermaker and 13-year NFL veteran Cris Dishman is New York's cornerbacks coach. Current Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm played quarterback for the Orlando Rage in the previous version of the league in 2001.
The XFL will open its new season Feb. 8, 2020. The league is planning to have a 10-week regular season, with each team hosting five home games, and no open week. This will be followed by a two-week postseason, featuring the top two teams in each division competing in a single-elimination bracket.
