WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Fifth-year senior Brycen Hopkins has been named the John Mackey Tight End of the Week after his performance against Maryland last Saturday. The recognition is his second of the season, having also been feted after Purdue's opening game at Nevada.
Hopkins had 10 receptions for 140 yards, both career highs, against the Terrapins last weekend. Hopkins' catch total was the most by a Boilermaker tight end since the inaugural Mackey Award winner Tim Stratton had 12 catches against Washington State in the 2001 Sun Bowl, while his yardage tally against Maryland was the most by a Purdue player at his position since Dustin Keller had 150 vs. Central Michigan in the 2007 Motor City Bowl. Both of Hopkins' marks lead all tight ends nationally in a game this season.
The John Mackey Tight End of the Week is an honor distinct and different from the annual John Mackey Award. The weekly honor was started in 2004 to draw attention to individual play by tight ends during the active season. The Tight End of the Week acknowledgment does not have a direct bearing on the final John Mackey Award selection process. The John Mackey Tight End of the Week honor will run until the announcement of the eight semifinalists in November.
