Moon-Inspired Helmet Auction
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - In honor of the 50th anniversary of NASA's Apollo 11 lunar mission and Purdue's accreditation as the Cradle of Astronauts, the Boilermaker football team unveiled a custom moon-inspired helmet and astronaut-themed patch. The Boilermakers are set to wear the designed pieces for Saturday's Homecoming game against Maryland.
Paying homage to Purdue's impressive astronaut alumni, the helmet is designed to resemble an astronaut's helmet. It features a chrome gold mask on a white helmet to represent the gold tint of a space suit's visor. It also features a gray and white moon pattern as a nod to Purdue's two alumni on the moon, Neil Armstrong and Gene Cernan, as well as center stripe with Armstrong's first footprints on the moon.
The numbers on the helmet stripe - 2, 25 and 64 - represent Purdue men to walk on the moon, the number of Purdue astronauts in space and total number of space missions by Purdue astronauts. Nearly a third of all U.S. spaceflights have included a Purdue graduate, while 10 missions have included multiple Boilermakers.
The helmet also will don a mission sticker on the back that illustrates the Griffin from Purdue's crest planting the Purdue flag on the moon, similar to the American flag being planted on the moon 50 years ago. The sticker also incorporates Purdue's anniversary motto "150 Years of Giant Leaps" and the outline shape of the Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering. The sticker's design also will be represented as a patch on the team's jerseys.
Altogether, the Boilermakers will be dressed in white jerseys, white pants and gray gloves Saturday. Kickoff against the Terrapins is slated for noon ET on BTN.
Purdue Cradle of Astronauts includes:
Gus Grissom - the second American in Space
Neil Armstrong - the first person on the moon
Gene Cernan - the most recent astronaut to walk on the moon
Loren Shriver - commanded the space shuttle to a record altitude of 380 miles above the earth
Janice Voss - has been on five spaceflights, the most by a female astronaut
Jerry Ross - set record with seven missions and nine spacewalks
Beth Moses - the first female commercial astronaut
