WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Redshirt freshman quarterback Jack Plummer will lead the Purdue football team against No. 12 Penn State on Saturday.

Plummer is "the guy" for the foreseeable future after fifth-year signal-caller Elijah Sindelar was injured last week against Minnesota.

In nearly three quarters of playing time, Plummer completed 23 of 41 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns. He rallied the Boilermakers from a 21-point third-quarter deficit with a pair of fourth-quarter scores that yielded the 38-31 final.

Two weeks prior, Plummer started for the injured Sindelar against TCU and completed 13 of 29 passes for 181 yards and a touchdown.

Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm said the key for Plummer is not trying to do too much.

"Jack just has to play within himself and do what he does," Brohm said. "We have to make sure that he uses this as a great learning experience and that he continues to make plays when it's there and continues to pull it down and run when it's not.

"I think this is a great test, and this is why you play the game. You play great football teams, and I know he will be excited to compete."

Plummer has shown the ability to make plays both with his arm and his legs. His 18-yard rush against Minnesota is the Boilermakers' longest of the season. And he complements his physical skills with knowledge and smarts.

"He's very intelligent, he picks things up very quickly and he has a great grasp of what we are doing," Brohm said. "The thing he has to work on is just getting some experience out there on the playing field.

"There's always tweaking going on. There's always adjustments being made. Jack maybe doesn't quite have the arm as Elijah, but he's an accurate passer, and he can move around and make some plays. Jack is a competitor, and I know he's going to work hard and give us everything he's got."

True freshmen paced Purdue in rushing (King Doerue 94 yards) and receiving (David Bell eight catches for 114 yards) against Minnesota.

"It's our job to develop our players and get them ready to play, and that's everybody on the team," Brohm said. "When guys go down, the others have to be ready to play."

The Boilermakers (1-3, 0-1) and the Nittany Lions (4-0, 1-0) kick off at noon ET at Beaver Stadium, and the game will be televised by ESPN.
