TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Purdue cross country team posted a fourth-place men's finish (70 points) and a seventh-place women's finish (214 points) at the John McNichols Invitational, hosted by Indiana State.
A loaded field of competitors included four women's programs that ranked among the top eight in the nation while the No. 24 men ran with four top-16 teams, including No. 1 Northern Arizona, No. 5 Iowa State and No. 7 Stanford.
The men's team was led by three top 10 finishes. With Jaret Carpenter, Brody Smith and Curt Eckstein's eight, ninth and 10th-place finishes, respectively, Purdue posted the second-most runners in the top 10, second only to No. 1 Northern Arizona. Carpenter was timed at 24:14.9, while Smith and Eckstein were both locked at 24:15.1.
The women were paced by junior Megan Slamkowski, who clocked in at 17:41.5 minute 5k to finish 34th. Following Slamkowski in 47th-place was Jenna Halderman (17:58.6), Isabelle Sparreo in 53rd-place (18:09.4) and freshman Emma Tate in 61st-place (18:19.3).
The top five men's finishers averaged for a time of 24:28 minutes. Rounding out the group was Tyler Bowling (17th-place, 24:29.38) and Bailey McIntire (26th-place, 25:0.0.9).
In two weeks, the Boilermakers will return to action for another meet in the state of Indiana. Purdue will travel south for the Joe Piane Invite, hosted by Notre Dame.
