WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.
– Globetrotting Boilermakers Ben Bramley and Steele Johnson are set to represent USA Diving at the Pan American Games in Peru, their second multi-sport international competition of the summer.

The Peruvian capital of Lima is serving as the host city of the 18th Pan Am Games, which opened with an inauguration ceremony on July 26. Forty-one nations are scheduled to compete in the two-week showcase that features athletes from North, South and Central America as well as countries in the Caribbean.

Bramley and Johnson are slated to compete individually and together in the 10-meter diving events. The 10-meter synchro competition is a finals-only event on Friday, Aug. 2 at 9:45 p.m. ET. The men's events on the tower continues Monday, Aug. 5 with the prelim at 11 a.m. and final at 9 p.m.

Bramley and Johnson made their international debut as a 10-meter synchro team last month at the FINA World Championships in South Korea. They qualified for the final and finished eighth among the initial field of 17 teams in the prelim. They improved on their prelim score (373.80) by 10 points in the final (383.79), accounting for the first of the five top-10 finishes by Boilermakers competing for Team USA at the World Championships this year.

Eight Americans are scheduled to dive at the Pan Am Games, with all eight doubling up their summer travel after also being part of Team USA at the FINA World Championships. Bramley and Johnson returned home from South Korea for about three full days before departing again for Peru. Among the USA Diving travel party in Lima, Michael Hixon (Indiana), Amy Cozad Magaña (Indiana), Andrew Capobianco (Indiana) and Sarah Bacon (Minnesota) also either train at or are alumni of Big Ten universities.

Individually at the USA Diving National Championships in May, Johnson was third and Bramley fourth in the 10-meter competition. They actually finished second in the 10-meter synchro final, but their cumulative two-list score of 800.49 was No. 1 overall and earned them the berth at the World Championships.

Among active divers, Johnson is one of the USA's most experienced internationally. Along with his three career appearances at both the FINA Diving World Cup (2014, 2016, 2018) and the World Championships (2015, 2017, 2019), he's also an Olympic silver medalist in 10-meter synchro. He won that medal with David Boudia in Rio de Janeiro and now returns to South America for the first time since the 2016 Olympics. The 10-meter event in Rio marked the last time he competed individually on the tower at an international meet.

Individually, Johnson has not competed internationally in any event since representing USA Diving on 3-meter at a FINA World Series meet in Montreal in April 2018. He was sidelined by multiple foot surgeries from September 2018 through March 2019.

After placing sixth on the tower at the NCAA Championships this year, Bramley was selected to compete for the U.S. individually on 10-meter at a FINA Grand Prix meet in Calgary. Dating back to 2016, he has also traveled to Malaysia, Australia, Spain and Germany for Grand Prix meets. He placed fourth in Malaysia.
