GWANGJU, South Korea
– Purdue alumnus Steven LoBue is now a two-time medalist in 27-meter high diving at the FINA World Championships, winning silver in the event to close out the diving action at the biennial international showcase.

LoBue (2004-07) finished with a four-dive list score of 433.65, highlighted by a huge score of 142.80 on his five somersault with a half twist in round 2 that carried a 5.1 degree of difficulty.

The last two gold medalists in the event at the World Championships finished 1-2 this year. Great Britain's Gary Hunt, the 2015 champion, overtook LoBue in round 4 with the highest-scoring dive of the event. Hunt saved his most difficult dive until the final round and earned five 10s on his back triple somersault with four twists. The 5.2 degree of difficulty led to a big score of 156. Hunt won with a list score of 442.20.

As the defending gold medalist at the World Championships, LoBue held the lead entering the second day of competition Wednesday and carried a 12-point lead into the fourth and final. He closed out his list with 119.85 points on a back quadruple somersault with two twists, another difficult dive with a 5.1 degree of difficulty. It was enough to clinch silver after bronze medalist Jonathan Paredes of Mexico finished strong with a score of 128.8 in the final round.

Hunt, LoBue and Paredes were the only divers among the 12 to compete in all four rounds to exceed 400 points on their lists.

Fellow Purdue alum David Colturi (2008-10) placed 10th in the 27-meter competition with a list score of 343.90. He executed two more 90-point dives over the final two rounds Wednesday to climb from 15th place into the top 10. He scored 99.90 points on his last dive, a reverse double somersault with five twists that carries a 5.4 degree of difficulty as one of the most challenging dives currently being performed by any diver.

Colturi won silver in the event at May's FINA Diving World Cup, which was held in China. Colturi also won silver in the most recent Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series event earlier this month in Beirut. Andy Jones, Colturi and LoBue are the three Americans that compete fulltime on the Cliff Diving World Series tour. Jones (365.85) was sixth at the World Championships this week.

With LoBue and Colturi both finishing among the top 10 in their event, the six Purdue divers competing for the U.S. at the FINA World Championships combined for five top-10 finishes. David Boudia (3-meter), Brandon Loschiavo (10-meter) and the USA's 10-meter synchro team of Ben Bramley and Steele Johnson all finished among the top eight in their event while qualifying for finals.

The U.S. high divers have won at least one medal in every World Championships since FINA added the discipline to the World Championships in 2013. LoBue (four) and Colturi (three) have represented the USA at a combined seven World Championships.

The next stop on the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series is Aug. 24 at Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The annual Marmeeting: Mediterranean Cup High Diving Championship is traditionally held in Italy in early September. LoBue is also the defending champion at that prestigious event.

Jinq En Phee will be the final Boilermaker to compete at the FINA World Championships when she races in the 50-meter breaststroke for Malaysia on Friday at 9 p.m. ET. She placed second in her heat and 27th overall in the 100 breast with an Olympic B Cut time of 1:09.05. Nikola Acin also raced as part of Serbia's 4x100-meter freestyle relay team. He closed the race with a career-best 100 split of 49.36. Serbia finished 15th among the 25 teams that raced in the prelims.

If you have to change your title to "former world champion", 2nd place is a great consolation???????? #gwangju #worldchampionships2019
