WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.
– Purdue diver Emily Meaney is slated to return to the World University Games this summer to compete for her homeland Australia, becoming the fourth Boilermaker selected for the 2019 edition of the biennial international event.

Meaney finished fifth on 10-meter at the Australian Open Championships and World Championships Trials this month in Adelaide. She posted five-dive list scores of 280.60, 286.30 and 279.95 over the three rounds of competition. During her junior season at Purdue this spring, she was a silver medalist on platform at the NCAA Championships and bronze medalist in the same event at the Big Ten Championships.

USA Diving also announced this week that Emily Bretscher and Greg Duncan were selected for the World University Games, which are set for July 2 to 14 in Naples, Italy. It's the 30th Summer Universiade this year.

Alumna Kaersten Meitz is also making a return trip to the World University Games to represent USA Swimming.

Meaney and Meitz both won silver medals at the 2017 World University Games in Taipei, Taiwan. Meaney accomplished the feat in synchronized 10-meter with partner Brittany O'Brien. Meaney and O'Brien are both part of Diving Australia's 2019 National Squad, but are unlikely to compete together again next month. It is undecided at this time if Meaney will compete on 10-meter in both the individual and synchronized events this year. She was a finalist in the individual event and placed 10th overall two years ago.

Meitz also won silver in 2017 as part of the USA's 4x200 freestyle relay team. Purdue men's basketball took home silver as well while representing the USA.

Together, Meaney, Meitz and men's basketball became the first Boilermakers to medal at the World University Games since Ashley Karnes (1-meter) and Robbie Hummel (basketball) each won bronze for the USA at the 2009 Summer Universiade in Belgrade, Serbia.

Dating back Karnes' achievement, Purdue divers have won 10 medals at the three most prominent international events – the Olympic Games, FINA World Championships and World University Games. Six Purdue divers are expected to represent the USA at the FINA World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea next month.

Purdue swimming & diving has been represented by at least one student-athlete at the World University Games for each of the last eight biennial events dating back to 2005.
