LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska sent at least 10 men to the plate in a pair of big innings, taking control early with a six-run bottom of the first to defeat Purdue baseball 17-0 Friday in the series opener.

Three of the Huskers' six runs in the first inning scored on wild pitches. Nebraska (15-9, 5-2 B1G) connected for five extra-base hits in its seven-run fifth inning.

The Boilermakers (10-18, 4-2 B1G) loaded the bases with one out in the third inning, but were unable to get back in the game.

Kyle Wade and Hayden Wynja both worked 3 2/3 innings of relief, handling the unenviable job of getting Purdue through the night after starter Patrick J. Smith (3-2) was only able to record two outs. The Boilermakers had won each of Smith's last four starters, but the left-hander's command wasn't there on this night. He walked three, hit a batter and accounted for two of the run-scoring wild pitches.

A two-strike, two-run single by Carter Cross plated the game's first runs. Cross was the first of five consecutive batters to reach base safely after Nebraska chose to sacrifice bunt with its No. 3 hitter.

Purdue has been outscored 38-7 in the first inning this season. Of the 17 runs Smith has allowed as a starting pitcher, 15 have scored in the first inning.

Wynja retired eight of the first 10 batters he faced, highlighted by a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

Skyler Hunter singled and was hit by a pitch, extending his reached base safely streak in Big Ten play to 23 consecutive games. Nick Evarts' eight-game hit streak and Owen Jansen's nine-game reached base safely streak both came to an end.

Game 2 of the series is set for Saturday at 3 p.m. ET.
