WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Women's soccer head coach Drew Roff announced Sarah Clark and Maddy Duncan will lead the 2019 team as captains.
Duncan returns to her captaincy for the second straight year while Clark is appointed for the first time. Between the two rising captains, the duo have accounted for 4,807 minutes of play throughout their careers.
Clark, a product of Brighton, Michigan, is a defender entering her junior season. The upcoming junior played in all 18 games last season, including 1,547 minutes on the pitch. In addition to leading the team with six assists, Clark produced three goals, all coming on penalty kicks. With the effort, Clark became the only Boilermaker in history to make three penalty kicks in a single season and tied a program-best three attempts. Among the goals scored was the game-winner against Indiana, coming in double-overtime for Purdue to defend the Golden Boot.
"I am very honored and grateful to be named a captain for this team. It means a great deal to me to know that my teammates look up to me and view me as a leader," Clark said. "I'm super eager for the 2019 fall season to begin, I think we are going to come out on fire and hungry for success. I am very passionate about this game and I hope I can continually share and spread my ambition on and off the field to my teammates."
Teammate and defender/forward Duncan has appeared in 42 games heading into her senior season. As a junior, Duncan played in 14 of 18 matches and helped the Boilermakers to a 5-1-1 non-conference record to open the campaign. A steady force for the Boilermakers, Duncan contributed to the 2-1 win against No. 24 Louisville while adding 50 minutes in the stunning 2-1 victory against Iowa State.
"I am so thrilled to be working with Clark this season," Duncan said. "I think our different styles yet similar strengths will work well together and help this team excel next season. It is such an amazing feeling to watch the team evolve and progress together towards a common goal knowing all the hard work you have put in as a leader and member of the leadership team."
Clark and Duncan fueled the team through its five-game spring slate. Purdue closed out the mini season with its two strongest performances, fueling its way to a 2-1-2 spring record.
"Those were some great final exams for our team to see what we've learned and how far we've come," Roff said. "I was really impressed with how our team competed – the tactical improvements that we have shown and just the team spirit. The team chemistry was something that was really noticeable. How we played with each other and how hard we played."
Purdue notched wins against Loyola (2-1) and at Illinois (1-0) while tying Saint Louis (2-2) and the U19 Mexican National Team (1-1). Kylie Hase led the team in its final three outings with a goal in each meeting, including two game-winners.
"I feel like the spring season was very productive. We really took advantage of the time that we had to work with such a young group. This was probably the best spring that I can remember as a coach. It was really enjoyable to be a part of and I'm really excited to see improvements, both individually and collectively."
