Women's Tennis Embarks on Last Road Trip

The Purdue women's tennis team hits the road for the last time in the regular season for two Big Ten match-ups.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue women's tennis team hits the road for the last time in the regular season for two Big Ten match-ups. The Boilermakers will take on No. 21 Ohio State Friday at 4 p.m. ET in Columbus, Ohio, at the Varsity Tennis Center. On Sunday, the women will take on Penn State at noon ET in University Park, Pennsylvania at the Sarni Tennis Center.
 
No. 21 Ohio State not only boasts a team ranking but three singles rankings and one doubles ranking. The Buckeyes have No. 34 doubles partners Shiori Fukuda and Isabelle Boulais, No. 54 Isabelle Boulais, No. 79 Shiori Fukuda and No. 85 Kolie Allen.
 
Purdue senior Silvia Ambrosio continues to stay in the rankings at No. 30 in singles and No. 45 doubles with classmate Amina Mukhametshina.
 
Against ranked opponents, Ambrosio carries a 2-1 record in singles. Sophomore Ena Babic is also 2-1 against ranked opponents. Babic upset two singles opponents in one weekend to be named Big Ten Player of the Week. Seira Shimizu also claimed an upset when she defeated No. 114 Anna Vrbesnka of Ole Miss in two sets, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
 
The last time the Boilermakers upset a ranked foe was Jan. 26 against No.12 Ole Miss, when Purdue claimed victory in a tight road match 4-3.
 
Series History
Ohio State has been ranked every meeting in the last five years. Last year, No. 50 Purdue lost to No. 35 Ohio State 5-2. The Boilermaker charge was led by Ambrosio and Shimizu, who both notched points for the Boilermakers. Shimizu took down Maria Tyrina in two sets 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot, while Ambrosio upset No. 54 Anna Sanford at the No. 1 spot 1-6, 7-5, 7-5. The Boilermakers look to snap the losing streak against the Buckeyes and get their second upset of the season.
 
The Boilermakers lead Penn State 22-7 in the all-time series history. In the last five years the Boilermakers have split with the Nittany Lions 3-2. Both losses for the Boilermakers came on the road.
 
Last year, No. 50 Purdue took down Penn State 5-2, led by Ambrosio, who took down Frederikke Svarre in two sets 6-1, 6-2. Shimizu also gained a Boilermaker point with a victory over Samantha Smith 6-4, 6-1. At the No. 2 position, Babic took down Gabby O'Gorman 6-0 7-5. Calkins defeated Bennett Dunn 6-3, 7-6, and Alex Sabe won over Shannon Hanley 6-4, 6-4 to help secure the win for the Boilermakers.
