Last season, the Hoosiers edged the Boilermakers 1-0 in Game 1 before their bats came alive in Game 2 to earn a 11-4 victory at Bittinger Stadium. The pair of losses marked the first time Indiana had swept Purdue in a season series since 2012.
Despite the loss, Sydney Bates delivered one of her best pitching efforts, allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out six batters in seven innings pitched. One of the four hits was a solo home run in the third that ended up being the difference in the first game.
Purdue recorded seven hits against the Hoosiers with senior Jenny Behan registering the lone multi-hit performance with a single, a double and a pair of runs scored.
This season, the Boilermakers are coming off a big weekend at home in which they took two-of-three against Penn State. Purdue's bats caught fire as the Boilermakers scored 26 runs on 28 hits. Freshman Kendall Chase and senior Lexi Huffman each hit .500 on the weekend with the two infielders accounting for eight of Purdue's 28 hits against the Nittany Lions and seven of the 26 runs. Huffman was an RBI machine, driving in eight for the Boilermakers on five hits including two doubles and two home runs.
Altogether, Purdue is hitting .289 this season with seven Boilermakers hitting .321 or better. Behan has been the leading run producer for Purdue with 33 RBI and 36 runs scored thanks to a .367 batting average. The third baseman has 47 hits in 128 at-bats with 12 doubles, nine home runs and 18 walks.
Standing at 28-13, the Hoosiers come into the Wednesday's doubleheader at No. 39 in this week's NCAA RPI.
Junior Gabbi Jenkins is currently leading Indiana with a .327 average and is one of four Hoosiers hitting above .300. In addition, Jenkins has stolen 16 bases this season, bringing her career total to 55, which is good for sixth-most in Indiana program history.
In the circle, fellow junior Emily Goodin and senior Tara Trainer are guiding the Hoosiers with career-best seasons. Owning a 1.92 ERA, Goodin has recorded 89 strikeouts, while Trainer has tallied 173 strikeouts to rank 12th in the country and is second in the conference.
The non-conference test comes before a three-game series at Bittinger Stadium, against Nebraska Cornhuskers beginning Friday.
