PITTSBURGH – Purdue wrestlers Dylan Lydy (174) and Christian Brunner (197) were defeated in the consolation round of eight, better known as the Blood Round, during the evening session of the NCAA Championships at PPG Paints Arena on Friday. A win by either wrestler would have sent a Boilermaker to the podium as an All-American for the first time since 2013. The loss ends the NCAA run of both Lydy and Brunner.
Just like at the Big Ten Championships, a few seconds of riding time were the determining factor in Nebraska's Mikey Labriola getting his arm raised in a matchup with Lydy. Friday night it was six seconds. Six seconds allowed Labriola to claim victory, 3-3 in the second tiebreaker, and become an All-American.
Lydy, the No. 11-seed, was on bottom in the first of the second set of 30-second tiebreakers with the match locked at 2-2. It took 12 seconds for Lydy to escape and he knew he would have to ride Labriola for at least 12 seconds in the next 30-second tiebreaker.
Lydy tried to throw a leg in, but Labriola built up and popped from Lydy's grasp six seconds in. In one of the few opportunities Lydy was able to break through Labriola's defense, he got in high on Labriola's left leg and tripped the Husker. Lydy kept both feet in, but Labriola skirted out of the circle and into the splits to avoid Lydy coming around for the takedown.
The clock hit 0:00. It was over.
Both of Lydy's trips to the NCAA Championships have ended in the Blood Round, with All-America honors eluding the 174-pounder. The redshirt junior from Indianapolis, Indiana, concludes his season with a record of 29-10.
Fresno State's Josh Hokit was hot off the whistle and kept putting points on the scoreboard, beating 11th-seeded Brunner 13-4 to garner All-America status at 197 pounds. The 16th-seeded Bulldog took Brunner down twice in the first period and dominated on top in the second frame. Hokit tilted for a four-point nearfall, and after a Brunner escape, dropped him to his back, nearly pinning the Boilermaker, and earned two swipes for a 12-3 lead.
The third period was a neutral start by Hokit and that's the way the period went—with both wrestlers on their feet for the final 2:00.
Brunner's third NCAA Championships were his best yet. His quarterfinal appearance in Friday's morning session was a first for a Boilermaker since 125-pounder Cashé Quiroga in 2010. Brunner, a native of East Dundee, Illinois, ends his junior campaign at 25-11, with the 25 wins as a career high.
Purdue's eight NCAA wrestlers totaled 11.5 points and sit in a tie for 28th. There are three teams behind the Boilermakers that still have a wrestler competing Saturday. Last year the Boilermakers finished tied for 28th with a dozen points, which was the most points since scoring 17.5 in 2012.
The tournament continues Saturday from PPG Paints Arena with Sessions 5 and 6.
