PITTSBURGH – A major upset lifted No. 11 Christian Brunner into the 197-pound quarterfinals of the NCAA Wrestling Championships during Thursday's evening session at PPG Paints Arena. After going 3-5 in Session 1, Purdue's wrestlers combined to go 7-3 in Session 2 with six additional Boilermakers still alive in the wrestlebacks.

Session 3 will begin Friday at 11 a.m. ET, starting with quarterfinals with the second round of wrestlebacks running concurrently. The third round of wrestlebacks will close out the session. Click here for Session 3 bout numbers and opponents.

Brunner was in control from start to finish in a 6-2 upset of sixth-seeded and three-time All-American Willie Miklus of Iowa State. The 11th-seeded Boilermaker took the Cyclone down late in the first period and ended the match with an exclamation point, taking Miklus down with just one second remaining.

Brunner, who hails from East Dundee, Illinois, is Purdue's first quarterfinalist at the NCAA Championships since Cashé Quiroga at 125 pounds in 2010. Brunner will take a career-best record of 25-9 into a quarterfinal collision with third-seeded Preston Weigel of Oklahoma State.

The Boilermakers in the consolation bracket thrived in must-win situations. At 125 pounds, No. 17 Devin Schroder put up bonus points in a 12-4 major decision over Army's No. 33 Trey Chalifoux for the 20th win of his redshirt sophomore campaign.

Eleventh-seeded Dylan Lydy prevailed in sudden victory, taking No. 27 Vincent Deprez of Binghamton down with nine seconds left in the 60-second extra session to win 3-1. The win took the 174-pounder's record to 27-9.

Wrestling on the mat next to Lydy, No. 25 Max Lyon answered a first takedown by No. 24 Tanner Harvey of American with takedowns of his own late in the first and midway through the second on his way to a 6-3 victory. Lyon moved to 24-13 with the win and will wrestle again Friday.

It's appropriate to call Jacob Aven Thursday's feel-good story. The heavyweight went from the alternate at heavyweight to sliding into the bracket, and on Thursday night, he rattled off back-to-back wins in wrestlebacks.

The Zionsville, Indiana, native, capped off the night by knocking out 14th-seeded AJ Nevills of Fresno State 9-5. Aven (13-22) was relentless, scoring a pair of first period takedowns, a reversal to start the third frame and added another takedown.

No. 15 Ben Thornton and No. 19 Griffin Parriott suffered defeat in the championship second round at 133 and 157 pounds, respectively. It was an 11-2 major decision by second-seeded Stevan Micic of Michigan that sent Thornton into wrestlebacks, while Northwestern's No. 3 Ryan Deakin blanked Parriott 9-0.

The only Boilermaker to bow out of the tournament was 141-pounder Nate Limmex. The redshirt junior began the second session with a 7-4 outing over Northern Colorado's No. 32 Christopher Sandoval.
