No. 15-seeded Thornton (22-9) survived a third period flurry from No. 18 Gary Wayne Harding of North Carolina, winning 12-10 in sudden victory. Thornton held a 6-0 lead late into the second period before Harding rattled off five takedowns to go ahead 10-9. Thornton's 1:35 of riding time knotted it at 10-10 to force sudden victory. His winning takedown came 26 seconds into the frame, earning his 90th career victory.

It was the second consecutive overtime match for Thornton. His last match, the seventh-place match of the Big Ten Championships, was also decided in sudden victory with the Boilermaker beating Illinois' Dylan Duncan 3-1.

Parriott put up a pair of takedowns in the first period on his way to a 7-4 upset of No. 14 Zach Hartman of Bucknell. The 19th-seeded 157-pounder built riding time the third period and his 1:09 gave him a cushion against a late reversal by the Bison.

Hartman, ranked 11th nationally, stands as the fifth ranked opponent Parriott has defeated this season. The redshirt sophomore improved to 16-11 with the win.

A third period rideout for Purdue's 11th-seeded 197-pounder secured a 1-0 decision over The Citadel's No. 22 Sawyer Root. It was the fourth shutout in the last five wins for Brunner, who is seeded 11th at 197 pounds. The win took his junior mark to 24-9, matching his win totals from the two previous seasons.

In a battle between Indiana natives, Ben Harvey avenged a high school state title loss to Dylan Lydy by upsetting the 11th-seeded Boilermaker 8-3 in a first round match at 174 pounds. Harvey, the No. 22-seed from Army, scored the first of two takedowns just 12 seconds into the match. Lydy (26-9) was unable to get a takedown of his own throughout the match—just the seventh time in 35 matches wrestled this season.
