SAN ANTONIO – The Purdue Boilermakers concluded their first meet of the 2019 outdoor track & field season with the UTSA Invite. In total, the Boilermakers notched seven victories over the two-day meet, including a sweep of both the men's and women's 100-meter dash.
Waseem Williams, the fastest 100-meter dash sprinter in Purdue history, made his return to the outdoor stage with two victories. With a sprint of 10.41 seconds, Williams secured first-place in the 100-meter dash before claiming the 200-meter dash crown as well with a time of 21.41 seconds.
The women's team was led by junior Myia Dorsey who recorded two top 2 finishes. Dorsey won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.00 seconds, before placing second with a 24.12 time in the 200-meter dash.
The meet began Friday with two Boilermakers securing wins. Sarah Loesch won the hammer throw, producing a toss of 197-06.00/60.20m for the victory, before adding a fourth-place finish in the discus Saturday. She was joined by Brody Smith, who ran Friday's 2,000-meter steeplechase to victory in 5:51.61, out-pacing the runner up by over 10 seconds.
The women's long jumpers had a successful day on the field as well, with Boilermakers taking a 1-2 punch with first and second-place. Jaden Mattox's fourth jump of the day (19-02.75/5.86m) catapulted her to victory, followed by Asia Young's second-place finish with her third attempt of 19-00.50/5.80m.
Earning his first victory of the season was Blanchard Montgomery IV with his 400-meter hurdles performance. The freshman crossed the finish line in 53.12 seconds to take the win.
Fourteen of the men's points were earned during Friday's javelin, with three Boilermakers contributing top marks. Michael Weller led the way with a runner-up finish, tossing the javelin 201-07.00/61.44m, which was just shy of his personal-best set at the UTSA meet in 2017. Placing in fourth was Isaiah Martin, followed by Lucas Foertsch in sixth-place.
