Purdue to face Bradley, Savannah State and South Alabama for second weekend in Florida

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue (7-5) begins its fourth non-conference tournament of the season Friday with the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic in Orlando, Florida. In the three-day tournament, the Boilermakers will face Bradley, Savannah State and South Alabama.
 
Purdue looks to build on its 4-1 showing at the Madeira Beach College Invitational last weekend, when the Boilermakers defeated Middle Tennessee, North Florida, Albany and Georgetown.

SCOUTING BRADLEY  
Bradley (5-9) enters the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic looking to bounce back from 0-4 showing at the Tennessee Invitational last weekend. In Knoxville, the Braves fell to the No. 7 Vols, Louisville and Virginia. However, despite the losing streak, BU is currently tied for second in the NCAA in home runs with Georgia with 24. Kealia Wysocki (.316) leads the club in that category as she has seven. Wysocki also paces the club in RBI (16), total bases (35) and slugging percentage (.921),
 
Grace French (1-1) directs the team in the circle with a 1.56 earned run average. As a staff, BU holds a 5.27 ERA.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Bradly owns a 6-2 advantage in the all-time series, having claimed four of the last five matchups. Last season, the Braves defeated the Boilermakers 4-0 in the Citrus Classic.
 
SCOUTING SOUTH ALABAMA
After playing nine of its last 10 games at home, South Alabama comes to Florida for the first half of its seven-game road swing. Jaguars are currently 8-6 after winning four of five over the weekend at its second home tournament of the season. At the plate, South Alabama has hit a home run in nine of its last 11. Pacing the Jaguar line up is Brittani Reid, who was named the Community Coffee Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday, after batting .500 with seven runs scored at the Mardi Gras Invitational.

Leading the Jaguars in the circle is Alexis Reid (5-3), who won her last four decisions. The right handed hurler tops the team and ranks sixth in the SBC with a 2.23 earned run average.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Purdue and South Alabama have met three others times in the all-time series with the Jaguars holding a 2-1 advantage. This weekend's game marks the third time that the two teams meet at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic. They last met in the classic for the 2012 and 2017 seasons.

SCOUTING SAVANNAH STATE
Savannah State (0-8) comes into the weekend looking for its first victory of 2019.  Enduring losses to Alabama A&M and Georgia Southern, SSU is hitting .212 with only 16 runs on the season. The team is guided by three Tigers batting over .300. Shayna Byers (.444) leads the team, while Stacie Smith (.400) tops the team in hits (10), runs (5), total bases (13) and has been successful in seven of her eight stolen base attempts. Peyton Mitchell rounds out the trio, hitting .316 and leads the team in home runs with two.
 
Defensively, the Tigers own a 5.49 staff ERA.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Purdue owns a 1-0 edge in the all-time series against Savannah State after defeating the Tigers 11-1 in last year's Citrus Classic.
 
THE PURDUE REPORT
Purdue returns to the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic for the third consecutive year after going 4-1 showing at the Madeira Beach College Invitational. The Boilermakers picked up wins over Middle Tennessee, North Florida, Albany and Georgetown, with the lone loss of the tourney coming to South Dakota.
 
As a team, Purdue has been outstanding offensively hitting .310 as a squad , including four Boilermakers hitting above .350 with 26 extra-base hits and 66 RBI.
 
Pacing the squad is Madison Douglass with an .440 batting average. Douglass' nine RBI are tied with Jenny Behan  for second on the Purdue roster. Rachel Becker is right behind Douglass, hitting .438, followed by Kasey Wilhoit (.400) and Mallory Baker (.359)
 
 In the circle, right-hander Kaitlynn Moody (2-1) holds a team-low 2.67 ERA, while Sydney Bates has struck out a team-high 19 batters this season.
