CLEVELAND
– Purdue baseball alumnus Kevin Plawecki has been acquired by the Cleveland Indians in a three-player trade with the organization that drafted Plawecki in 2012, the New York Mets.

Plawecki made his big league debut for the Mets in April 2015, helping New York win the National League East and NL pennant that season. He joins a Cleveland franchise that has won three consecutive American League Central titles. The Indians traded Yan Gomes, their starting catcher for much of 2018, to the Washington Nationals last month. Roberto Perez and Plawecki are in line to make up Cleveland's catching corps this coming season.

"We're excited to add Kevin to our Major League catching mix," Indians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said. "The guy has earned a reputation as a really good teammate, a good receiver, and leads a pitching staff really well."

Plawecki was the 2012 Big Ten Player of the Year and Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player while helping Purdue win the conference title and tournament. The Boilermakers' three-year starting catcher was drafted 35th overall by the Mets that June. He has played in 237 big league games during his career, including a career-high 79 in 2018. He worked with 2018 National League Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom in New York and now should have an opportunity to catch another Cy Young winner in Cleveland ace Corey Kluber.

Plawecki is scheduled to be the featured guest speaker at Purdue's inaugural First Pitch Dinner, set for Saturday, Jan. 19 on campus. The dinner is open to the public and tickets are priced at $35. The registration deadline is Friday, Jan. 11.

The Mets acquired pitcher Walker Lockett and minor league infielder Sam Haggerty in the trade.

Plawecki is the first Boilermaker to be involved in an MLB trade since Matt Frawley (2014-16) was acquired by the New York Yankees organization in June 2017.
