ISTANBUL
– Purdue's Batuhan Hakan established a national record in the 800-meter freestyle while winning the event Wednesday at the Turkish Swimming Federation's Young Age and Open Swimming Championships.

Competing in the 19-and-over age group, Hakan won the event in 7:50.66. He was victorious by 8.36 seconds as one of only two men to break eight minutes in the short course meters event. Similar to events during the NCAA season, the Turkish nationals this week feature 25-meter/yard lengths of the pool.

Monday, Hakan also won silver in the 1,500-meter freestyle with a time of 15:16.80. Both times represent Turkish Olympic Trials qualifying marks for 2020.

Currently a sophomore for the Boilermakers, Hakan eclipsed the program record in the 500-yard freestyle as an A finalist in the event at the Big Ten Championships last season. He was also part of Purdue's 800 free relay team at Big Tens, moving into sixth place in program history in the 200 free with a leadoff split of 1:36.43. The Istanbul native also ranks among the Boilermakers' all-time leaders in the 1,000 (9:21.06, 15th) and 1,650 free (15:25.64, 13th).

Hakan scored in the 200, 500 and 1,650 free last month to help Purdue win the three-day Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City. He finished among the top nine in all three events, taking fifth overall in the mile and winning the B final of the 500.

Purdue is remaining on campus for its winter training program this season. That training continues until spring semester classes begin Monday, Jan. 7. The Boilermakers' next meet is Friday, Jan. 11 at Michigan State. The co-ed dual begins at 3 p.m. ET.
