WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's basketball team opens its 37th season of Big Ten Conference play Friday, hosting Ohio State for a 4 p.m. ET tip at Mackey Arena. It marks the first season the Boilermakers have opened the conference schedule at home since 2011-12, holding a 20-16 all-time mark in Big Ten openers and 10-5 record in Mackey Arena.
PROBABLE STARTERS
Karissa McLaughlin, So.
Dominique Oden, Jr.
Ae'Rianna Harris, Jr.
Tamara Farquhar, So.
Kayana Traylor, Fr.
LOOKING BACK
The Boilermakers wrapped up the non-conference schedule last Friday against Bradley, dealing the Braves their first loss of the season as Purdue improved to 9-4. After a 10-10 start the Boilermakers reeled off 19 straight points and rode that run to 52 first half points and their highest scoring first half in 10 seasons. McLaughlin led all scorers with 23 points, while Harris secured her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
ONE MORE WIN
Purdue head coach Sharon Versyp entered the 2018-19 season tied with Lin Dunn for the Boilermakers' career Big Ten Conference wins record, owning 120 to date. Her 129 career Big Ten wins ranks eighth all-time (nine in 2005-06 at Indiana), third-most among active coaches and are seven wins shy of moving up to fifth all-time (136, Jim Foster, Ohio State).
MORE WEEKLY RECOGNITION
Harris was named to the Big Ten Player of the Week Honor Roll on Monday for the second time this season and made it two straight weeks with a Boilermaker on the honor roll, following Oden last week. Harris' double-double against the Braves was her fifth of the season and 14th of her career, matching Camille Cooper for No. 8 on Purdue's career list.
CHARITABLE SEASON
The Boilermakers have been making the most of their free throw attempts over the last four games, hitting a combined 83.1 percent (69-83) at the stripe. McLaughlin is getting the most of it, leading the Big Ten and ranking sixth in the NCAA at 93 percent (40-43) on the season.
ALL ABOUT OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes come to Mackey Arena at 4-5 after losing a pair at the West Palm Invitational in the week before the holiday break. They fell to Butler 66-53 and Virginia Tech 81-73, making their first trip to Mackey Arena with a losing record since 1991. Ohio State's non-conference schedule was shortened by two games, missing a west-coast roadtrip due to the fires in California where they had scheduled Sacramento State and No. 6 Stanford. The Buckeyes are led by seventh-year head coach Kevin McGuff, who is 127-56 in his Ohio State tenure and 18 wins shy of 400 in his coaching career. The Ohio State roster has radical turnover from the 2017-18 season, featuring only two players who stepped on the floor for last year's team: Makayla Waterman and Jensen Caretti. McGuff brought in six graduate transfers and three freshman during the offseason. One of the Buckeye transfers is a familiar face as Carmen Grande faced the Boilermakers four times over the last three seasons at Ball State and was second in the NCAA last season in assists for the Cardinals. Transfer Najah Queenland was teammates with Boilermaker transfer Jenelle Grant last season at the University of the Pacific. Cleveland State transfer Ashanti Abshaw played for one season under Purdue assistant coach Beth Couture (COO-chur) as an associate head coach for the Vikings.
