Dive-by-Dive Scoring
ATLANTA – Purdue's Emily Bretscher and Brandon Loschiavo both took home bronze medals while finishing on the podium for the second time this year at national meet, capping a successful week for the Boilermakers at the USA Diving Winter Trials.
Bretscher added a bronze on 3-meter to her third-place finish on 1-meter at the USA Diving Senior National Championships in May. Loschiavo placed third on 10-meter after winning silver in the event at Nationals in Dallas.
Both third-place finishes could be enough to earn the Purdue duo berths at the 2019 World University Games if things break the right way as USA Diving assembles its rosters for the biennial event.
Ben Bramley placed seventh on 10-meter, finishing among the top 10 in the event at a USA Diving winter national meet for the third year in a row. He improved on his prelim score by nearly 50 points in the final.
PURDUE RESULTS FRIDAY AT USA DIVING WINTER TRIALS
Emily Bretscher, 560.15 (265.75 Final, 294.40 Prelim); Finished 3rd on 3-meter
Brandon Loschiavo, 766.45 (393.70 Final, 372.75 Prelim); Finished 3rd on 10-meter
Ben Bramley, 728.50 (388.65 Final, 339.85 Prelim); Finished 7th on 10-meter
Bretscher topped the 3-meter prelim leaderboard with a score of 294.40. She carried a 2.15-point lead into the final, but a poor score of 39 in round 3 of the final cost her a chance at winning the event. She had earned a list-high score of 67.50 on that same dive in the prelim. That was the primary reason her list score in the final dropped by nearly 30 points.
Loschiavo improved on his prelim score by 21 points to 393.70 in the final, but still dropped one place from second to third. His list score rose thanks to scores of 80-plus in rounds 2 and 6. He had the top-scoring dive in the entire field in round 6 of both the prelim and final. But Loschiavo missed his round 4 dive in both the prelim and final, scoring only a combined 57.35 points on the forward 4 ½ somersault. Just one of his other 10 dives on the day produced a single score lower than that combined total.
The Purdue divers compete again Friday, Jan. 11 when the Boilermakers' collegiate dual meet schedule resumes with a 3 p.m. ET meet at Michigan State.
